Georgia Officer Takes Part In 5K Race One Year After Being Shot In The Head
Last year, officer Matt Cooper was shot in the head while responding to a 911 call. He survived but is in the midst of a long recovery. He made further progress this weekend when he participated in his department's yearly 5K run. Taking part in the Covington Police Department's annual Fuzz Run was one of Cooper's goals during his hospital stay that included multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy. “I was so mad I missed [last year's run],” Cooper told The Rockdale Citizen. “I said I was doing it this year. My main goals were to get my feeding tube out, my skull put back on, and run the Fuzz Run this year.” “To be able to finish with a quick jog for at least 10 feet meant the world to me,” he said. “And to have everybody cheer me on... I'm beyond humbled by this city.”

LAPD Searches For Driver In Pico-Robertson Hit-and-Run Crash That Killed 30-Year-Old Man
The driver in a Pico-Robertson hit-and-run crash that killed a 30-year-old man last month remained at large Monday, according to police. Street racing or road rage are being probed as possible causes of the Aug. 29 crash as it remains under investigation, authorities said. Two vehicles were both driving westbound along Pico Boulevard at a high rate of speed just before 6 a.m. when one of the cars — a dark blue 2015 Infiniti Q70L — lost control and slammed into a building at the corner of Pico and South Crest Drive, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Ernest Jordan was later identified as the driver of the Infiniti by his father, William Jordan. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, a gray SUV, never stopped. Surveillance video appears to show the two vehicles driving alongside each other just before the crash.

Georgia Couple Poses As LA Sheriff's Deputies In $16K Scam
Authorities say a Georgia couple, posing as Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, bilked six victims out of $16,000 in gift cards in a telephone fraud scam. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva says Nicolas Brady Kennedy and Ashley Marie Walker of Loganville, Georgia, told nine people there were warrants out for their arrests and they could be satisfied by paying them in gift cards. Six paid; the victims were mostly elderly residents of northern Los Angeles County. Officials say Kennedy is in custody in Georgia on a probation violation and a warrant is out for Walker's arrest. They both face extortion and attempted extortion charges. The sheriff's department says detectives believe there may be more victims. Authorities say police departments will never ask for gift card payments over the phone.

During Traffic Stop, Passenger Tells California Deputies The Driver Kidnapped And Raped Her
A Sacramento woman who said she had been kidnapped and repeatedly raped was found by Mendocino County deputies inside a vehicle during a traffic stop over the weekend, authorities said. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Department stopped Thao Vang, 33, on a Ukiah road Saturday night, citing vehicle code violations. Christine Maxwell, also 33, was in the passenger seat of Vang's car. During the stop, deputies noticed another woman in the back seat, who was shaking and crying, with bruising on her body, sheriff's officials said. The 34-year-old woman, who was not identified, told deputies that Vang had kidnapped her in Sacramento four days earlier and had taken her to a home where he had repeatedly raped her, physically abused her and held her against her will. She said she had been forced to travel with Vang and Maxwell to Ukiah, authorities said, adding that she believed her kidnappers were going to kill her. Vang, who was wanted on a Butte County warrant on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance while armed, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and rape. Maxwell was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and conspiracy.

As Illnesses Spread, Fake Vape Gear Sells On LA Streets
A short walk from police headquarters in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a cluster of bustling shops are openly selling packaging and hardware that can be used to produce counterfeit marijuana vapes that have infected California's cannabis market. Bootleggers eager to profit off unsuspecting consumers are mimicking popular, legal vape brands, pairing replica packaging churned out in Chinese factories with untested, possibly dangerous cannabis oil produced in the state's vast underground market. The result: Authentic-looking vape cartridges sold by unlicensed dispensaries and delivery services, along with rogue websites. The deceptive rip-offs on the street could be linked to an emerging public health crisis.

More Mosquitoes Test Positive For West Nile Virus In L.A. And Orange Counties

New samples of mosquitos found in Los Angeles and Orange counties have tested positive for West Nile virus, bringing the the total number of infected samples found this year up to 140 in both counties, health officials said Friday. In Los Angeles County, infected samples were found in Boyle Heights and Whittier last week, raising the county's total up to 28 so far this year. Infected samples found in Anaheim, Buena Park, Fullerton and Stanton brought Orange County's 2019 total up to 114. The virus is transmitted to people and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito, and is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At least 89 people have contracted West Nile in the state this year as of Sept. 2019. Four of the cases were in L.A. County, according to a report by the California Mosquito-borne Virus Surveillance and Response Program.

Where Could Homeless People Sleep Under L.A. Plan? Activists Take To Streets To Check
When Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell laid out a proposal that would bar people from sleeping on streets and sidewalks near schools, parks and other targeted facilities, local activists lined up at a City Hall hearing to denounce the idea and showed up at O'Farrell's home in Glassell Park to protest. Now they have taken to the streets again — this time with pens and maps. Homeless advocates and activist groups, including the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project and members of the Services Not Sweeps Coalition, launched a joint effort to walk the streets and assess where homeless people could be barred from sleeping if the proposal passed. Their analysis, which looks at a patch of Echo Park stretching half a mile in radius around an O'Farrell district office, marks banned areas around parks, schools and day-care centers. Under the proposal, people would be prohibited from sleeping on streets and sidewalks within 500 feet of those and other targeted locations.

LA Public Works Board Approves New Sidewalk Encroachment Policies For Further Consideration

The Los Angeles Board of Public Works on Monday approved changes to a policy that would require people to obtain permits for planters, railings, fences and other items placed on city sidewalks. The changes are significant since planters and other installations were put in some neighborhoods to deter homeless people from sleeping in front of businesses. The policy will be reviewed by the Mayor's Office, City Council, LAPD and the City Attorney's Office before any changes are implemented. Board members considered giving applicants a three-month window to obtain a right-of-way “R-permit.” Some fixtures have affected accessibility for people with disabilities and can block bus stops, board members said, and the installations could also cause a safety hazard. Bureau of Engineer representatives said they've identified about 300 installations that would be out of compliance with the policy changes.
