3 Arrested In Shooting Death Of El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy
Police say three men have been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Northern California sheriff's deputy who was killed while responding to a falsely reported theft from an illegal marijuana growing operation in the rural Sierra Nevada foothills. Authorities say El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Ishmael was killed Wednesday in the community of Somerset. An off-duty sheriff's deputy from San Joaquin County was doing a ride-along with Ishmael and was also shot. El Dorado County Sheriff John D'Agostini says the 911 caller did not mention that he had a business arrangement with the men who were in the marijuana garden. The gunman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and another man is charged with being an accessory. The 911 caller has been charged with manslaughter.

Trial Could Be Set By Year's End For Man Who Allegedly Assaulted Officer
A trial date is expected to be set next month for a man accused of trying to speed away from Cathedral City police during a traffic stop, dragging an officer a short distance. Steven Flores, 33, of Cathedral City, was wanted for allegedly shooting at a man during an attempted robbery outside a Palm Springs apartment about two weeks prior to being pulled over on July 21, 2018 near Date Palm Drive and McCallum Way when an officer recognized his car from a suspect vehicle description. Flores allegedly fled during the traffic stop with the unidentified officer partially in his vehicle, causing minor injuries to the officer, according to Cathedral City police Cmdr. Julio Luna. He was arrested the following week in the 3000 block of Robert Road in Thousand Palms by the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Task Force, which turned him over to the Cathedral City Police Department, according to sheriff's Sgt. Paul Heredia.

Concerned Parents Warn Of Man Exposing Himself ‘Possibly Putting Children At Risk'
Parents who live near Canoga Park have reported two separate incidents involving a man who they say was acting indecent in public near a school, possibly putting children at risk. FOX 11's Stephanie Stanton spoke to those parents who caught the man on tape. They say he should be charged with a crime. Witness Ben Gamon says he was driving and saw what he thought was a homeless man reaching into a fanny pack but quickly realized it wasn't a fanny pack and saw the man pleasuring himself. Gamon saw the man near Fallbrook Ave. and Vanowen St. Monday morning while driving his kids to school. “It is disturbing. It's been three days and we're still shocked,” Gamon said. Another witness, Brittany, says she was in a parking lot near Sherman Way and Topanga Canyon Boulevard Monday morning dropping her son off at school when she was approached by the same man.

Woman Who Escaped Submerged Car At Port Of Los Angeles In 2015 Testifies Against Ex-Husband
The ex-wife of a Hawthorne man on trial for insurance fraud stemming from the drowning deaths of their two severely autistic sons told a downtown jury on Thursday, Oct. 24 how she escaped a submerged car at the Port of Los Angeles while her former husband climbed a ladder to safety without attempting to save the trapped children. Rehab Diab told the panel in the federal criminal trial of Ali Elmezayen that on April 9, 2015, the Egyptian-born defendant took the family for a drive to the port to buy fish and look at ships. He began searching for a parking spot, Diab testified through an Arabic translator, before pointing the vehicle towards the murky ocean off San Pedro. “I thought he would stop, but the car accelerated towards the sea and I started to scream,” Diab told the jury, adding that Elmezayen did not apply the brakes or utter a noise.

Gang Member Convicted In Series Of Burglaries That Targeted Asian Victims
A gang member was convicted Thursday of a series of burglaries that primarily targeted Asian victims in the San Gabriel Valley, including one in which a 59-year-old woman was beaten. The Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated nearly a day before finding Ron Simmons, 21, guilty of one count each of torture, mayhem and conspiracy, two counts each of first-degree residential robbery and attempted first-degree residential robbery and five counts each of first-degree burglary with a person present and first-degree residential burglary involving crimes between December 2017 and October 2018. Jurors also found true gang allegations. The panel acquitted Simmons of a sixth count of first-degree residential burglary, and deadlocked on an elder abuse charge that was subsequently dismissed. Simmons, who is due back in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom for sentencing Nov. 26, is facing a potential life prison term.

California Struggles To Keep Illegal Guns And Ammunition From Crossing State Lines
Ten special agents from the California Department of Justice were watching as a man walked out of the Big Reno Show and placed his purchases in his car. The black Isuzu with California plates headed west on Interstate 80 into the Sierra Nevada, eventually crossing the Nevada state line. That's when the California Highway Patrol pulled Vincent Huey over. Inside the vehicle, state Justice Department agents found 18 high-capacity magazines, some capable of holding 30 rounds, according to court records. In recent years, California has enacted increasingly strict gun control laws. Assault rifles and ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds are illegal to buy or import in California, but stopping their flow over the border has been a struggle. In 2018, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 3,920 guns originally purchased in Nevada and Arizona were recovered by California law enforcement officers from crime scenes, confiscated from criminals or found unclaimed.

‘A One-Woman Crime Spree': Con Woman Charmed Boxers, Executives And Manicurists
The Washington Redskins player and his agent met Cindy Lin at a Porsche dealership in McLean in 2015. She told them she was only in her 30s but was wealthy, well-connected and ready to buy a majority stake in the city's NBA team. According to a letter the agent wrote to the court, they eventually invested in what they thought was a bid for the Washington Wizards. After a time the two became suspicious. There were inconsistencies in her stories, the agent wrote. They wondered about her parade of sports cars and even her age. They asked for their money back; to date, they have not gotten it, the agent wrote. Neither have most other victims of the woman, whose real name is Siew Im Cheah. Over the past two decades, prosecutors say the Malaysia-born con artist, now 59, has stolen at least six identities and several fortunes. From Virginia to California she would take on the personas of her roommates and nail technicians, then use those identities to profit from a series of scams.

Apartment Building In Canoga Park Goes Up In Flames Injuring Several People
A two-story garden-style apartment building in Canoga Park went up in flames late Thursday night during a time of strong winds in the area. The Los Angeles Fire Department says strong Santa Ana winds stoked the flames and made it difficult for the 52 firefighters battling the blaze to quickly douse the flames, but even so, crews extinguished the fire in 24 minutes. Officials say five people were treated by paramedics for smoke-related injuries and one person had to be taken to the hospital. Their condition is unknown. The fire broke out at about 11:41 p.m. in the 8500 block of N. International Avenue. It's unknown if any firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tick Fire Scorches Nearly 4,000 Acres In Northern LA County; Mandatory Evacuations In Place
A wind-driven wildfire raced through Canyon Country in northern Los Angeles County on Thursday, Oct. 24, scorching nearly 4,000 acres, destroying some structures and threatening more, prompting evacuations throughout the rural area. The fire was reported early Thursday afternoon near the 31600 block of Tick Canyon Road, earning it the moniker Tick fire, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Initially reported at 200 acres, the blaze rapidly grew to more than 850 acres in less than an hour. By early evening, county fire officials estimated the blaze to be roughly 3,950 acres, down from an earlier estimate, since more accurate information became available, LA County fire spokesman Marvin Lim said. It was 5 percent contained as of 9:35 p.m. At least one structure could be seen burning, and crews on scene reported multiple other structures burning or were immediately threatened by the flames. As many as 50,000 people were affected by evacuation orders, officials said late Thursday.

Fires Explode Across California, From Wine Country Vineyards To Southern California Subdivisions
Fueled by violent winds from the northeast, fires erupted on dry hills across California, tearing through oaks and vineyards in Sonoma County and burning homes hundreds of miles away in subdivisions near Santa Clarita. The extreme weather conditions will continue into this weekend, heightening both the fire threat and the likelihood of more widespread power outages as utilities try to prevent electrical lines from sparking more blazes. As the winds swept into California on Wednesday night, an eruption of fires big and small followed: first Northern California wine country, then San Bernardino, Orange County, Marin County, Santa Clarita, Eagle Rock and the San Fernando Valley. Firefighters were able to control some while others exploded out of control.

L.A. City Councilman John Lee Calls For Review Of Aliso Canyon Investigations
Los Angeles City Councilman John Lee called this week for a report that details the findings of the regulatory investigations of the Aliso Canyon underground natural gas storage facility and the actions that have been taken since a 2015 blowout led to the largest-known human-caused release of methane in U.S. history. “While regulatory jurisdiction of the facility lies with the state, given the impact of the blowout on city residents, it is important that the City Council receive a comprehensive report on the status of the facility, the settlement agreement and regulatory proceedings and reports,” Lee said. “This report back will help the city determine what additional actions need to be taken in conjunction with the closure to protect residents from similar incidents in the future.” Calls to the Southern California Gas Co., which operates the facility, were not immediately returned.

If Approved, A LA Program Would Establish A Savings Account For Every First-Grader
A Los Angeles City Council committee Wednesday forwarded a proposal to create a children's savings account program that could begin in the first grade. The council's Health, Education, Neighborhoods, Parks, Arts and River Committee approved a motion to create a savings program for every child enrolled in Los Angeles Unified School District public and affiliated charter schools. "There isn't another school district or student population in the country that is more deserving or more in need,'' City Councilman David Ryu added. "Eighty percent of the students in LAUSD fall under the federal poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced school meals, and 17% of LAUSD students are homeless. These kids are exactly who a children's savings account program like this will give a much-needed leg up to.''

LA Metro Looks Beyond Nordhoff Street To See If There's A Better Route For Major San Fernando Valley Bus Line
Metro's board of directors is moving forward with an environmental review of options that would provide a speedy bus line on the north end of the Valley. In its study, the agency will conduct an analysis to address concerns raised in recent months by the area residents, elected officials and Cal State Northridge students about potential routes of the North San Fernando Valley Bus Rapid Transit, which aims to run east and west on the north end of the 818. “The project is moving forward,” said Los Angeles City Councilman and Metro board member Paul Krekorian. But he added that it was important, before construction begins, to study all possible routes, including through Nordhoff street, Reseda and Roscoe boulevards, with an effort to lessen impacts for communities along the bus line.
