Detroit Officer Fatally Shot Investigating Home Invasion
A police officer was fatally shot and another was wounded while responding to a home invasion on Detroit's West Side, authorities announced late Wednesday. The officers were searching the home for a suspect when they were shot, Police Chief James Craig said. An 18-year veteran of Detroit Police was shot in the neck with a high-powered rifle, Craig said. The officer was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he died from his wounds. The second officer, a three-year-veteran, was shot in the leg and was reported in serious condition. Neither officer was immediately identified. "Today is a tragic day for the Detroit Police family," Craig said. "Certainly, our hearts and prayers go out to his family, certainly our community and all of the officers in the Detroit Police Department. He really is a hero."

5-Year-Old Boy Killed Of Possible Self-Inflicted Gunshot In Leimert Park
A 5-year-old boy was killed Wednesday when he apparently found a gun that went off in his hands inside a Leimert Park home. Los Angeles police responded at 1:15 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the home in the 2000 block of Van Ness Avenue, and the child was found inside. “Initially it appears to be a self-inflicted” gunshot, an LAPD official told City News Service. LAPD Cmdr. Alfred Labrada told the station there does not appear to be any evidence of the bullet being fired into the home from the outside. “We don't have any reason to believe there's any danger to the surrounding community,” he said. “We don't have any information there is a round that was fired into the residence at this point. We are looking at that as a possibility, but we don't see that as having occurred at this residence.” He said a gun was found inside the home and it “is a possibility” that the child discovered the weapon and it discharged.

Woman Pleads To Child Endangerment After Crashing Into LAPD Harbor Station With Infant In Car
A 30-year-old woman was sentenced to five years of probation Tuesday for crashing her car into the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor station with her 2-month-old child in the vehicle, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. Michelle Denise Betancourt pleaded no contest to one felony count each of child endangerment and vandalism, the DA's office said. A judge ordered her to stop driving while on probation and attend a one-year child abuse treatment counseling program. Betancourt's car came crashing into the police station at 2175 John S. Gibson Blvd., just outside San Pedro, on Feb. 9, 2019. The watch commander on duty at the time approached from behind and tried to get her to get out of the car. But the vehicle then accelerated backwards, and the police sergeant had to jump out of the way, LAPD said. The sergeant said the woman was acting hysterical and wouldn't follow his commands. The car ended up slamming into a pillar, and officers were able to take Betancourt out of the car.

Arrest Made After Video Shows Lyft Driver Violently Throwing Passenger Out Of Car
After a ride-share driver was caught on video throwing a woman out of his car, the Los Angeles Police Department said Wednesday that an arrest has been made. The LAPD says the ride-share driver has been arrested on battery charges. Alessandra Ward, the woman tossed from the vehicle, says a doctor told her she suffered a concussion in addition to her visible cuts and bruises--which include a black eye. Ward she was relieved that the Lyft driver had been fired and that the LAPD had arrested him for battery. On the video, Ward can be seen pulled from the vehicle, with other drivers pulling over to try to help her. "He went insane or something," Ward said. Ward said the driver got angry with her for playing music while she was in the back seat and that he was hostile from the moment he picked her up.

L.A. Sentencing Delayed In Swatting Case
A sentencing hearing was delayed Tuesday until Dec. 23 for an Illinois man who admitted helping a Los Angeles man make fake emergency calls to police to get even with supposed online gaming rivals. The hearing for 24-year-old Neal Patel was postponed so the defendant can show he could be trusted to follow the conditions of court-ordered supervision. Court papers show the prosecution and defense have both agreed on a sentence of three years probation, $33,208 in restitution and 300 hours of community service to include a video presentation describing the dangers of “swatting,” a hoax designed to provoke a law enforcement response to a nonexistent threat. “He's being supervised and he needs to follow the rules,” U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez said from the bench, noting that Patel, who is free on bond, had recently violated unspecified conditions of supervision.

Weapon Used In Saugus High Shooting Was ‘Kit Gun,' Authorities Say

The weapon used in the Saugus High School shooting that claimed the lives of two students and wounded three others was a "kit gun" assembled from parts, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told Eyewitness News. Authorities are attempting to determine how the "kit gun" was assembled and by whom -- the suspect or his late father. When investigators searched the suspect's home as they sought a motive for the attack, six firearms were found at the home that were all registered to the suspect's late father. "The mystery is trying to piece together who assembled what and at what point in time," Villanueva said. "Kit guns" can be sold at gun shows, online and can be bought with 80% of the weapon already assembled. "They're sold as a kit. You can legally buy it, assemble the weapon yourself and then you have a gun that is not registered and no one knows that you have it, and that is very dangerous," Villanueva said.

State Would Expand Juvenile Courts, Halls To 18- And 19-Year-Olds Under Proposal
California would expand its juvenile-justice system to include 18- and 19-year-olds under a proposal from the state's probation chiefs, a move they said would allow a more restorative approach for those teenagers but one expert warned could be difficult to implement. The plan from the Chief Probation Officers of California lobbying group, or CPOC, would let 18- and 19-year-olds receive rehabilitative services provided by juvenile courts and detention centers and allow more young people to have their criminal records sealed. Currently, people older than 17 are handled in adult courts, which tend to be more punitive and do not provide the same level of privacy. The group cites a growing body of research on adolescent brain development showing that people as old as 25 share many of the same characteristics as teenagers, including a susceptibility to peer pressure and impulsive behavior.

Amid Gentrification Fears, Officials Kill Plan For 577 Apartments In South L.A.
The South Los Angeles Area Planning Commission has voted to reject a plan for 577 apartments near a Crenshaw Boulevard light-rail station, the latest flare-up in a debate over gentrification and the benefits of market-rate housing. The commission, which is made up of appointees of Mayor Eric Garcetti, unanimously opposed the six-story development known as District Square, despite a last-minute offer from the developers to charge below-market rents at 63 apartments inside their project. Tuesday's vote effectively kills the project at City Hall, unless a member of the City Council requests a review and a reversal of the decision. Councilman Herb Wesson, who represents the area, has already come out against District Square.
