Alabama Officer Killed In Drug Task Force-Related Shooting
Authorities on Saturday identified an Alabama police officer who was killed during a drug enforcement operation and said the man's father was also an officer with the Huntsville Police Department who died in the line of duty. Billy Clardy was shot in the heart Friday during a drug buy set up by authorities at a residence where they expected a suspect to drop off a large amount of drugs, Huntsville police said. The suspect immediately shot Clardy on the porch and was captured after a short foot chase, authorities said. 2 L.A. Men Sentenced For $4 Million Luxury Car Sublease Scam
A judge sentenced two Los Angeles men to state prison Friday for running a luxury car sublease and theft scam that netted nearly $4 million, authorities said. Arman Mave Hazarian of Tarzana and Afshin Hashemi of Hollywood, both 48, each pleaded no contest in October to three felony counts of grand theft auto and one felony count of grand theft, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. Hazarian additionally admitted taking property valued at more than $3.2 million, as well as taking more than $500,000 through fraud and embezzlement. They ran a scheme between 2017 and 2019 in which they would persuade investors to lease luxury cars, then turn them over to the defendants to be subleased at a profit, according to prosecutors.

Firefighters Rescue 40-Year-Old Man From LA River
A 40-year-old man stranded in the Los Angeles River near Atwater Village was rescued by firefighters Sunday, narrowly avoiding the 20 mph waters. After a patrolling LA Fire Department rescue team discovered the man at about 3 p.m, about 40 rescuers were called to the location, near Los Feliz Blvd, according to LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey. A helicopter was also overhead in case the crew couldn't get to the man. As the 2-foot-deep waters continued to rise, the rescue team reached the man, trapped on a narrow piece of higher ground near the trees. He was harnessed and loaded onto an inflatable boat before being taken to safety. The man was rescued within two minutes of the crew's arrival. It remains unclear why he was stuck in the river. But firefighters believe he may have been one of the homeless people who encamp near the river.

Los Angeles Committee Takes Step Forward In Banning Flavored Tobacco Products A Los Angeles City Council committee advanced a proposal to ban flavored tobacco products, but it voted to make some exceptions. The City Council's Health, Education, Arts, Parks and Neighborhoods Committee voted to advance the proposal to the full council unanimously. Councilman Mitch O'Farrell proposed exempting existing legally operating smoking lounges, specially permitted by the city attorney's Tobacco Enforcement Program, that would be limited to people 21 and older and for on-site consumption only. O'Farrell said he also wanted to make sure those business licenses were not transferable. The councilman also laid out recommendations for working with different business source centers to conduct assessments as a result of any laws that are adopted. And he proposed those businesses be required to check IDs with scanners for on- and off-site consumption.
