2 Arrested In Shooting Of Merced County Sheriff's Deputy During Robbery At Illegal Marijuana Farm
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of shooting a Merced County sheriff's deputy whose protective vest may have saved his life. Javier Delgadillo-Munoz and Paul Glenn, both of Modesto, were arrested Wednesday night after the attack on the deputy, the Merced Sun-Star reported. It wasn't immediately clear whether the men had lawyers to speak on their behalf. The Merced County deputy had gone to a home north of the community of Livingston at around midnight Wednesday to investigate a report of people who appeared to have guns fighting in front of a house, Sheriff Vern Warnke said at a Thursday news conference. When Deputy Oscar Ochoa arrived, he was ambushed and returned fire after the third shot, the sheriff said. His protective vest kept him from serious harm. He was treated at the scene, taken to a local hospital and was expected to recover, the Sun-Star reported.

Authorities are now searching for Jayson Colvin, whom they named as a suspect. “He's known within law enforcement due to prior contacts,” Brown said. “I would consider him as armed and dangerous.” The shooting happened about 12:15 p.m. near the Winn-Dixie on State Road 19 at County Road 44, authorities said. According to reports, Winheim was at a nearby Shell gas station when he reported that he heard gun shots fired. Man Pleads Not Guilty To 2 Murders, Including A Reseda Woman In The 1980s
A Bakersfield man pleaded not guilty Thursday in the murders of two young women in the 1980s, including a Reseda resident whose body was found in the trunk of her car in a Burbank parking lot. The case against Horace Van Vaultz Jr. marks the first criminal prosecution in Los Angeles County involving investigative genetic genealogy, in which detectives access commercial DNA databases, load DNA material from the crime, find a relative's match that can point toward a suspect and collect their DNA, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey. Vaultz, 64, is charged with the June 9, 1986, asphyxiation of 22-year-old Mary Duggan in the San Fernando Valley and the July 16, 1981, strangulation of Selena Keough, a 20-year-old mother who was killed in San Bernardino County and dumped under bushes in Montclair. Both women had been sexually assaulted and bound, authorities said.

SoCal Man Arrested In $24M Scheme To Sell Bogus Laptop Batteries
A Southern California man was arrested Thursday in an alleged $24 million scheme to sell counterfeit laptop batteries from China in the United States, federal prosecutors said. Zoulin Cai, a Chinese national who moved to the Los Angeles area in 2012, faces multiple charges including conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a release. It wasn't immediately known if Cai, 28, has an attorney. The indictment alleges Cai and co-conspirators in China manufactured bogus lithium-ion batteries that bore counterfeit trademarks of companies like Apple, Dell and Toshiba. They then sold the fake batteries to unsuspecting individuals in the U.S. via online sellers like eBay and Amazon, prosecutors said. Counterfeit lithium-ion batteries carry the risk of extreme heat, fire, and explosions. The batteries that Cai and his co-conspirators allegedly shipped lacked required internal safeguards, according to prosecutors.

In 2019, Homelessness Truly Felt Like A Crisis In Every Corner Of L.A.
Homeless people have long been a part of the landscape of Los Angeles. In skid row. In Hollywood. More recently, in Venice. But this was the year that the tents, tarps and broken-down RVs, and the unseemly sights, sounds and smells of people living on the streets became inescapable, no matter where you lived or worked. This was the year that homelessness truly felt like a crisis in L.A. At last count, close to 59,000 people — roughly the population of Cupertino, Calif. — lacked permanent housing across L.A. County. That's up 12% from last year. Meanwhile, in the city of L.A., the number climbed 16% to more than 36,000. Most live outside and, according to a recent Times analysis, are deteriorating fast, with more people than previously reported afflicted by addiction, mental illness and physical disabilities. We're at the point that homeless people, sick and traumatized from spending their lives on the streets, are dying in record numbers. This year, it's about 1,000.

L.A. Takes Step Toward Loosening Rules On Renting Out Homes For Short Stays
Worried about apartment buildings being run like hotels through websites like Airbnb and Vrbo, Los Angeles leaders decided last year to ban people from renting out a home for short stays if it isn't their main residence. Now, just weeks after the city started enforcing those rules, L.A. is exploring whether to ease its ban and allow people to host travelers in second homes, which the city has dubbed “vacation rentals.” The City Planning Commission, whose members are appointed by Mayor Eric Garcetti, voted 5 to 2 on Thursday to recommend passing a new law that would legalize and regulate vacation rentals. Doing so has been a goal for Angelenos who host travelers in a second home or other property, many of whom lamented this fall that L.A.'s newly enforced rules were going to land them in financial hardship.
