Arkansas Police Officer Shot Responding To Suicidal Person Call
An Arkansas police officer was shot and wounded Monday night by a reportedly suicidal person who was then shot and killed by other officers, authorities said. Police responded to a call of a suicidal person at an apartment complex in Bryant, about 15 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Little Rock. The Bryant Police Department said the person opened fire on the officers when they arrived, striking one of them. Other officers returned fire, killing the person, police said. The injured officer was airlifted to a Little Rock hospital, and her condition wasn't immediately released early Tuesday. The shooting comes less than three weeks after a Fayetteville, Arkansas, police officer was shot and killed while sitting in a patrol car outside police headquarters.

4 Men On Bicycles Shoot Canoga Park Man In Stomach
Four men on bicycles rode up to another man standing inside his Canoga Park garage early on Christmas Eve, police said, and then shot him. Gunfire was heard just before 1 a.m. Tuesday in the 8000 block of Loma Verde Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. When officers arrived, they found the injured man lying in his garage. The victim, only identified as a man in his 40s, had a single gunshot wound to his stomach and was taken to a hospital. LAPD Sgt. Marlon Lindsey said the victim was still alive Tuesday afternoon. He did not know the man's condition. Why the shooting occurred was a mystery – Lindsey said it could be several days before detectives figure out exactly what happened. It was unclear if the men said anything to the victim. Witnesses said all four men fled on bicycles immediately after the shooting. That shooting occurred about 10 hours after another shooting, which broke out a little less than two miles away.

Man Taken Into Custody After Leading Officers On Chase From Hollywood To Kern County
A man has been taken into custody after leading officers on a wild Christmas Day chase. The Los Angeles Police Department says the white Lexus SUV was reportedly stolen from the Hollywood area. SkyFOX overhead showed the vehicle driving at a high-rate of speed along the I-5 in the area of Gorman. The vehicle got off an exit in Kern County and continued driving along Gorman Post Rd. The driver then veered off the road and into a rural country area, eventually ramming through a gate. A successful PIT maneuver by CHP stopped the vehicle just feet away from a house. With guns drawn officers moved forward, took the driver out of the vehicle and into custody.

Man In Christmas Sweater Scales Westfield Topanga Mall, Has To Be Lifted Down By Fire Ladder
A man in a Christmas sweater scaled the Westfield Topanga mall late Monday and crawled around the roof of the adjacent Costco Wholesale building before police officers handcuffed him and lifted him down using a fire engine's rescue ladder. Police got to the man and put him in handcuffs, but determined they couldn't get him down from the roof safely. Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said firefighters were called at around 8:01 p.m. and used an aerial ladder with a basket attached to the end to lift the man from the building and place him safely on the ground. Humphrey said the man appeared to be suffering from a “behavioral emergency,” and he was placed in an ambulance and evaluated by paramedics, who determined he didn't need any immediate medical care. LAPD took the man, possibly in his 30s, into custody.

Harvey Weinstein Under Scrutiny In 8 Cases Alleging Sexual Misconduct In Los Angeles

Harvey Weinstein, scheduled to go on trial in New York next month on sex crime charges, also is under a cloud of sexual misconduct allegations in at least eight cases under review in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles District Attorney's office, which has been reviewing allegations presented against Weinstein by local police agencies for nearly two years, now has eight such cases pending before its task force of specially trained deputy district attorneys assigned to evaluate the cases for possible prosecution. The Los Angeles Police Department has presented four cases, and the Beverly Hills Police Department has presented another four since January 2018. Under the process set up by District Attorney Jackie Lacey, the task force is supposed to review the cases and decide whether to bring or decline to bring charges. So far, no decisions have been made in any of the cases. Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for Lacey, confirmed the total number of cases but could not confirm if any of the cases were newly reported. He declined to provide details of the accusations.

Judge Rules In Favor Of Candidate Rossi In DA Race Ballot Designation Spat
A judge ruled Tuesday that a candidate for district attorney lawfully listed “public defender, federal” as her ballot designation. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled that Rachel Rossi's ballot designation did not violate the state Elections Code. He heard arguments Tuesday morning, then took the case under submission before ruling Tuesday afternoon. The petition challenging Rossi's ballot designation was filed by David R. Evans, who identified himself as a registered voter. In their court papers, lawyers for Evans maintained the average voter wold be misled by Rossi's “public defender, federal” ballot designation because she now works in private practice. “She has one source of income and one job, which is working at Cohen Williams LLP as a private practice attorney,” Evans' lawyers stated in their court papers. However, Rossi maintained that supporters of rival candidate George Gascon were behind the challenge to her ballot designation. Gascon is a former San Francisco district attorney.

California's Vaping Black Market Is Hiding In Plain Sight, Officials Say
From the outside, the store is clearly marked. Inside, rows of colorful products are on display. As far as any average shopper on this street in California can tell, this is a legal cannabis shop. But it's not. Even in a state where it's legal to buy, sell and use recreational cannabis, the California Bureau of Cannabis Control (CBCC) says there are still unlicensed and illegal stores operating openly — selling untested, potentially dangerous products, including THC vaping cartridges. “It is difficult for consumers to know which shops are operating legally,” said Mark Hoashi, founder of Doja, an app that has been called the Yelp of cannabis. Hoashi walks through a legal cannabis shop called Chronic Pain Releaf. It looks like a hip pharmacy complete with exposed brick and staffers they call budtenders. Throughout the visit, he repeats his mantra: “Buy legal.” But Hoashi cautions it's not that easy to know if you're buying from the legal market since some illegal shops can look just like the legal ones, even displaying counterfeit licenses and charging tax to make them seem legitimate.

CHP Highlights New California Laws Going Into Effect In 2020
As Californians prepare to ring in a new year — and a new decade — CHP is urging motorists to be ready for a slate of new laws set to take effect in 2020 that will impact road safety. The new rules govern how bicyclists can travel through turn lanes, revoke an exemption that allowed some passengers to consume marijuana, and create a major step toward allowing roadkill to be salvaged, among other things. The laws are set to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Tuesday. Here are the ones CHP highlighted: Bicyclists at Turn Lanes - Under Assembly Bill 1266, bicyclists will be permitted to travel straight through turn lanes — right and left — at intersections, so long as the traffic light indicates such movement is allowed. Caltrans will develop the standards to implement the provisions, as required by the law.

Watts Residents Were Skeptical, But L.A. Just Opened A New Homeless Shelter Anyway
Councilman Joe Buscaino welcomed 100 homeless people to an early Christmas luncheon at the city's newest homeless shelter in Watts with great cheer, but also great frustration. The $5.4-million facility, which brings the total number of shelter beds available under the mayor's A Bridge Home program to more than 500, took 17 months to open. And that was after years of outreach to residents by Buscaino's office and homeless advocates to quash dissent, he said. “We had 150 community meetings to convince people this is a good idea,” Buscaino said on Monday, gesturing toward the tables of people on the patio, mercifully sheltered from the rain, laughing and chatting over plates of pasta and pizza. “This works ... but it's taking too long.” The 100-bed shelter opened in late November in a reinforced tent structure on Imperial Highway in Watts and it filled quickly.
