More Alabama Police Deaths In 2019 Than In Last 3 Decades
Lowndes County Sheriff John “Big John” Williams was shot and killed at a gas station. Huntsville police Officer Billy Fred Clardy III was killed as officers tried to intercept a suspected drug delivery. In all, six Alabama law enforcement officers were shot and killed in 2019, the highest number in more than three decades, according to state statistics. The attorney general's office provided statistics dating back to 1987 on officers that were feloniously killed in the line of duty. Five of the six slain officers were killed with stolen guns, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Nationally, 128 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in the first 51 weeks of 2019, including car crashes and other deaths, according to preliminary numbers from the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. Only three states — Texas, New York and California — had more deaths than Alabama.

Man Arrested After Punching 81-Year-Old Woman, Taking Her Car In Westchester, Police Say
A suspected carjacker accused of punching an 81-year-old woman before leading police on a chase from Westchester to the Mid-City area, where he drove on sidewalks, crashed into a police cruiser and attempted to flee on foot, was in custody. The man allegedly used bodily force to steal a sedan on Thursday at a gas station at 7550 S. Sepulveda Blvd., said Sgt. Keith Hopkins of the Los Angeles Police Department. The 81-year-old victim recounted the attack to Fox11. “I was getting gas and the man came up and asked for a ride and I told him, ‘No, no,' and shouted at him,” the woman said. “He had undone my gas (cap) and was pounding on the car like, ‘Look, you left it open,' so I got out to shut it and he punched me and kicked me.” The woman fell to the ground and watched as the assailant drove off in her car. Officers quickly located the man and pursued him to the Mid-City area, where he drove onto sidewalks several times to avoid capture.

Los Angeles Man Arrested After Flashing Fake Police Lights At Off-Duty Detective, Authorities Say
A 23-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of impersonating a police officer after authorities say he sped past an off-duty detective on a freeway in Rancho Cucamonga while flashing aftermarket red-and-blue lights on the grille of his Mercedes-Benz. Franklin Lopez Alas of Los Angeles was driving on the eastbound 210 Freeway shortly after 9 p.m. when he sped behind an off-duty El Monte detective in an unmarked police car, authorities said. Alas flashed the red-and-blue lights on the front of his Mercedes-Benz C250 in an effort to get the detective's vehicle in front of him to move, according to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department. Once the detective changed lanes, Alas drove past him and eventually reached speeds of over 100 mph, police said. The detective followed him onto the 15 Freeway, pulled him over near Baseline Road and then called for backup. During their investigation, police discovered that Alas had a suspended driver's license. He was booked at the West Valley Detention Center and then released. His vehicle was impounded, police said.

California Supreme Court Allows Therapists To Challenge Law On Child Porn Reporting
Psychotherapists have spent years fighting a 2014 California law requiring them to report patients who confided having looked at child pornography, complaining that it deters people with sexual compulsions from seeking treatment and forces therapists to call the police on patients they do not believe pose a risk. But they knew they faced a steep hurdle in getting the law overturned, citing what one scholar called “the ick and disgust factor” at the mere thought of the subject. A sharply divided California Supreme Court grappled with the case Thursday, deciding the state must show the law actually helps children by presenting evidence at a trial. In the 4-3 decision, the state's highest court overturned rulings that threw out a lawsuit brought by therapists who treat sexual compulsions, addictions and disorders. The court did not give therapists everything they wanted — a clear ruling that the law was unconstitutional — but revived their lawsuit so the effects of the reporting requirement can be closely examined.

LAFD Marine Units Stop Boat From Sinking At Wilmington Marina
A 40-foot boat was taking on water at Berth 204 at a Wilmington marina and marine units from the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the emergency, a fire department spokeswoman said. The call about the sinking boat came in at 7:34 p.m., said fire department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. Marine units put a siphon ejector in place which began removing water from the vessel, Stewart said. This action increased the boat's buoyancy. Firefighters also located one leak and were working to see if there were more leaks, Stewart continued. The marine units plugged the leak and stopped the boat from taking on water. A dive team will conduct a final external evaluation of the boat, she added. Two LAFD boats will remain on the scene while other resources are released. The owner of the vessel is not at the scene, Stewart said.
