Officials said it's one of several intersections police responded to due to a series of illegal street takeovers Sunday night into early Monday morning. The activity began around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Denker and Manchester in Gramercy Park before a second street takeover was reported at Caldwell Street and South Central Avenue in Compton. The crowd at the second street takeover then moved to another takeover at S. Western Avenue and W. Downtown Real Estate Developer Found Guilty In Jose Huizar Bribery Case
Five years ago, real estate developer Dae Yong Lee had a big problem: A labor group with serious political connections had filed a challenge against his plan for a 20-story tower in downtown Los Angeles. Lee, also known as David Lee, paid $500,000 in cash to get rid of the union opposition. That decision had enormous consequences for the businessman, forming a major part of the FBI's corruption case against former City Councilman Jose Huizar. On Monday, a jury found Lee guilty of paying a $500,000 bribe to ensure Huizar would shepherd his project through the city's planning process. The jury also found Lee guilty of wire fraud and obstruction of justice. And they handed guilty verdicts on the same three counts to his company, 940 Hill, which had sought city approval for the residential tower. The verdicts delivered a critical victory to the U.S. attorney's office in the first of three trials encompassing the sprawling corruption case against Huizar. Los Angeles Times |

Man Sentenced To Life Term For Killing Of Iowa State Trooper
An Iowa man was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting an Iowa State Patrol trooper last year during a standoff and shootout with police. The mandatory sentence was handed down a little more than a month after a jury found Michael Lang, 42, guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assaulting a police officer for his actions on April 9, 2021, that killed 51-year-old patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in Grundy Center. The city of nearly 3,000 people is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines. Judge Joel Dalrymple also ordered Lang to pay $150,000 in restitution to Smith's estate. Smith, a 27-year patrol veteran, was shot as he led a team of officers into Lang's home in Grundy Center. Lang had barricaded himself inside the home after he assaulted another officer during a traffic stop that day, police said. Lang was also shot by officers but recovered. Smith was the 11th trooper to die in the line of duty in the Iowa State Patrol's history. Since then, a 12th trooper has died in the line of duty. Associated Press |

Fire Officials Strongly Condemn Fireworks Use On 4th Of July As Drought Conditions Could Spark Fire
Fourth of July weekend is just around the corner and that means renewed warnings about the danger of illegal fireworks. Getting the word out is especially critical with California's extreme drought conditions. The persistent drought has firefighters on high alert and they're encouraging residents to be mindful and use "safe and sane" fireworks, which don't fly or explode. They also strongly urge people to stay clear of any illegal fireworks. "Any fireworks, even though they state 'safe and sane' are not necessarily safe and sane," Los Angeles County Fire spokesperson Craig Little said. "A sparkler can burn to a temperature of 2,000 degrees. A sparkler thrown into a high brushy area or on top of a house can be catastrophic as far as any kind of a damage concern." Fireworks throughout L.A. County are illegal in most cases. Fire experts warn that any kind of firework could spark an unintended blaze. ABC 7 |

Coronavirus In California Is Becoming Easier To Get, Much Harder To Avoid. Here's Why
The number of coronavirus cases reported in California is on the brink of crossing 10 million, a milestone that probably undercounts the total significantly yet still carries an increasing sense of inevitability. Since the hyper-transmissible Omicron variant stormed onto the scene in early December, the virus has wormed its way into seemingly every family and social circle. Residents who for years escaped infection were swept up in the resulting tidal wave of cases, though for many, the severity of illness has been lessened by vaccines, the availability of therapeutics and other factors. A plethora of high-profile people who have recently tested positive — among them Vice President Kamala Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom and even Dr. Anthony Fauci — have also fueled the notion that catching the coronavirus is no longer a matter of if, but when. “It's going to get easier and easier to get and harder to escape infection. But that doesn't mean we put ourselves in a sort of mind-set that, ‘You know, to hell with it. I'm just going to do anything I want to do anyway,'” Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UC San Francisco infectious-disease expert, said during an interview Friday. Los Angeles Times |
