LA On Record-Setting Pace For Hate Crimes In 2022
The city of Los Angeles is on pace this year to set another record for the number of hate crimes, topping a mark set just last year, according to data released Monday by a nonprofit news organization. Data compiled by Crosstown at USC, a nonprofit news organization based at the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, showed that during the first six months of the year, 349 hate crimes were reported to the Los Angeles Police Department, a 16.7% increase from the same period last year. The number is more than double the amount reported in the first six months of 2020, according to Crosstown, which cited LAPD records. Hate crimes in the first six months of the year most often targeted the Black community, with 91 reports, according to Crosstown. The next closest target was the Hispanic/Latino community, with 43 such reports, and the Jewish community at 39. According to the data, May saw the most hate crimes reported to the LAPD at 78, and 71 more in June — the two highest monthly totals ever recorded in Los Angeles. Crosstown noted that in the three years prior to the pandemic, an average of 20 to 40 hate crimes were reported monthly. FOX 11 |

Prosecutors Have Asked To Hold Nurse Charged In Fatal Windsor Hills Crash With No Bail
The LA County District Attorney's Office has asked a judge to hold in jail with no bail the woman accused of killing six people in a fiery crash earlier this month in Windsor Hills, citing ‘worsening' mental health concerns. In a motion to oppose bail release the DA's office cited information provided by Nicole L. Linton's defense attorneys that said Linton, who has been working as a traveling nurse, had been involuntarily committed to mental health treatment and had hurt herself more than once. “The Defense has disclosed a number of prior incidents which appear to be increasing in severity, ranging from the defendant jumping on police cars to jumping out of apartment windows,” a deputy DA wrote in the motion filed ahead of a bail review hearing Monday. Linton was charged August 8 with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for the collision August 4, in which the CHP said Linton sped into opposing traffic at the intersection of La Brea and Slauson. “The defendant's extremely reckless conduct combined with her mental health struggles that have escalated to the point of taking the lives of six individuals and harming seven more clearly comport with the exceptions for detention without bail under the California Constitution,” the DA's motion said. Prosecutors also said Linton has limited ties to Southern California, which could raise the prospect of her being a flight risk. NBC 4 |

$20,000 Reward Offered For Information On Double Murder In Compton
Family members and homicide detectives gathered Friday morning to announce a $20,000 reward in exchange for information on a double murder that took place November 2021 in Compton. "Homicide investigators are asking for the public's help for information that may lead to the identification of the persons responsible for this murder," said Lt. Daniel Vizcarra of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. At about 1 a.m. on November 14, 2021, 19-year-old Javier Menchaca and 22-year-old Juan Orozco were in their car at a street take-over near the intersection of Pine Avenue and Bullis Road. Detectives said as officers approached the scene to break up the take-over, they heard gun shots. They said they found Menchaca and Orozco shot multiple times at close range. "We've pursued every angle we could think of," said Sgt. Michael Austin of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "We have no reason to believe either victim in this case was a member of a gang or had any affiliations with any gangs." Deactivates said they've hit a road block in the investigation, saying of the 200 to 300 people present at the street take-over, no one has come forward. Now, family members of both victims plead for the public's help to find who did this to their sons. ABC 7 |

San Diego Becomes Epicenter Of Fentanyl Smuggling Amid Spike In Deaths, Drug Seizures
More fentanyl is seized at the California- Mexico border than any other border region in the country, according to data released by the U.S. Attorney's Office and other federal officials this past week. The designation isn't all that surprising, given the region's longtime status as the predominant gateway for trafficking fentanyl into the United States. But the amount of fentanyl being seized here points to the drug's increasing hold on the illicit U.S. drug market. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid up to 50 times more potent than heroin that is cheaply manufactured by Mexican drug cartels. It is often pressed into pills — often disguised as prescription opioids — but also laced into other street drugs or sold as powder. Small amounts can be lethal, and rising overdose deaths have been attributed to inaccurate dosing and potent "hot spots" caused by poor mixing methods during the manufacturing process. Often, users don't know they are taking fentanyl. In the first nine months of fiscal 2022, from October through June, U.S. Customs and Border Protection seized just over 5,000 pounds of fentanyl at ports of entry, checkpoints and during other law enforcement operations in San Diego and Imperial counties. That's about 60 percent of the total amount seized by border officials nationwide. San Diego Union Tribune |

$100K Reward Offered In Slaying Of North Carolina Deputy
A $100,000 reward is being offered in the case of a sheriff's deputy found fatally shot along a dark stretch of road in North Carolina last week. “Horrified” by a string of shootings that have injured and killed several deputies in the state in recent weeks, the North Carolina Sheriffs' Association announced the reward Monday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the killing of Wake County Sheriff's Deputy Ned Byrd. The 48-year-old K-9 officer had been with the office for 13 years. Byrd joined the sheriff's office as a detention officer in 2009 and was sworn in as a deputy in 2018, according to the sheriff's office. “We grieve with the families of the affected officers, and we offer our condolences to their friends, coworkers, and communities,” the association said in a statement. “We extend our support to every law enforcement officer; we know these shootings make the burdens of your service heavier and the dangers of your work feel imminently more threatening.” Associated Press |

LA County Logs 26 More COVID-Related Deaths
Los Angeles County has recorded another 10,025 new COVID-19 infections over a three-day period ending Monday, while also logging another 26 virus-related fatalities. The county Department of Public Health reported 14 deaths from Saturday, seven on Sunday and five on Monday. It also reported 4,869 new infections from Saturday, 3,262 on Sunday 1,894 on Monday. The county no longer reports COVID numbers on weekends. The number of new COVID infections reported each day by the county is believed to be an undercount of actual virus activity, since many people use at-home tests, the results of which are not always reported to the county. The new cases gave the county a cumulative total from throughout the pandemic of 3,361,061, while the death toll rose to 32,948. The average daily rate of people testing positive for the virus was 10.1% as of Monday. MyNewsLA.com |
