MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the Los Angeles Police Department to safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence and fear of crime, and to enhance public safety while working with the diverse communities to improve their quality of life.

THE IDEAL BASIC CAR
________________________________________________

The organization and structure of LAPD insures that every neighborhood, in every community, has it's own unique group of LAPD Police Officers serving it around the clock.

These Police Officers are assigned to what is known as the IDEAL BASIC CAR, which is usually a black and white LAPD patrol vehicle, but might also be a bike patrol or a foot beat.

Supervised by a Senior Lead Officer (SLO) the typical Basic Car has two Officers each shift, and since they are deployed 24 hours a day, every community in the City has an extensive compliment of Officers who serve it.

LAPD encourages communication and cooperation with local residents so that it can better understand the needs and the problems of a particular area.

In every neighborhood, the SLOs and the Basic Car Police Officers are the front line representatives of the Department. Each of them is dedicated to reaching out to their local community, a block or two at a time, until the entire Basic Car area is included.

The Police Officers of the Ideal Basic Car and their LAPD supervisors invite members of the public to feel free to introduce themselves to their Basic Car Officers. We need to get to know each other.

As LAPD Chief of Police Bernard C. Parks has said about problem solving partnerships, "Safeguarding our communities is a combined responsibility shared by all residents..."

For the Los Angeles Police Department to be most effective it is extremely important it forms strong partnerships with the community.

This concept is called Community Policing. The interaction and cooperation between LAPD and the public is vital if the Department is to live up to it's motto:

TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE

One of the cornerstones of Community Policing is the C-PAB, the Community Police Advisory Board. Each LAPD Area has it's own C-PAB, where concerned local residents meet with the Area Commanders of their LAPD Division every month.

In addition, there are frequent Town Hall Meetings, Community Forums and weekly Police Commission meetings at Parker Center, LAPD headquarters. The Commission convenes on occasion in different parts of the City, so that everyone in the community has an opportunity to meet and address the Board.

LAPD wants to increase participation and partnership with the community. We encourage the residents of Los Angeles to meet, talk to and share ideas with all LAPD members, and at all levels.

Having community members engaged with LAPD in Problem Solving is the best way to improve the quality of life.
