COMMUNITY
POLICING / IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE
Start time of 12:10 p.m. (Session 2) changed to 11:00 a.m. (Session

Start time changed from 11:00 a.m. (Session 1) to 12:10 p.m. (Session

NEIGHBORHOOD
KNOWLEDGE LOS ANGELES / NKLA (Session 3)
Newly added. Charan Singh from the UCLA Advanced Policy Institute
will introduce you to using the Web for mapping and research techniques
to assist you in identifying opportunities to enhance the potential
of your community. There will be a focus on creative ways to use
free online and community-collected data to support neighborhood
development, and establishing a baseline for measuring community
progress.
CHANGING
THE LAWS THAT GOVERN NCs (Session 4)
Cancelled. Those who have concerns, questions, and comments about
the Brown Act should attend “Brown Act Basics,” a two-hour workshop
that includes Sessions 1 and 2. There will be plenty of time for
questions and answers. Those with comments about other laws are
encouraged to attend “Just Questions and Answers” in Session 4.
COMMUNICATING
WITH STAKEHOLDERS (Session 1)
Added to this workshop are Rafael Gonzalez from Public Allies; Geoff
Maleman, a public affairs consultant, Mark Siegel, Greater Griffith
Park Neighborhood Council and the Alliance of Neighborhood Councils;
Doug Epperhart, Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council; and Chris
Bedrosian, Grass Roots Venice Neighborhood Council.
WORK
PLAN DEVELOPMENT/MEASURING YOUR SUCCESS (Session 1)
This is a two-hour workshop that combines two workshops that were
scheduled separately.
NEIGHBORHOOD
COUNCILS AS A PARTICIPATORY BODY (Sessions 1 & 2)
This workshop will be conducted in Session 1 and then repeated in
Session 2. Julie Butcher, General Manager, SEIU Local 347, and President
of the Quality of Productivity Commission will participate.
WORKING
WITH OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCILS (Session 2)
Added to this workshop is Noah Modisett from the Alliance of Neighborhood
Councils.
Q&A.
CERTIFICATION – BEST PRACTICES (Session 2)
Jaqueline Simms from the Watts Neighborhood Council has been added
to this workshop.
ETHICS
AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST (Session 3)
Will be taught by LeeAnn Pelham, Executive Director, City Ethics
Commission.
SOLVING
COMMUNITY PROBLEMS/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (Session 3)
Will be led by Dr. Denise Fairchild, President, Community Development
Technologies Center.
REPRESENTING
YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL THROUGH THE MEDIA (Session 4)
Christal Smith from KPCC Radio will join this workshop and her tips
about communicating through radio and TV.
