LA
Neighborhood Council Issues, an e-group
by Bill Murray
LANCissues Yahoo e-group Moderator
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ANNOUNCING
a NEW Neighborhood Council FORUM
... an e-group for LA Regional and Citywide Issues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Open to All LA NC Stakeholders / Voluntary Registration
This
is an invitation to participate in the forum at LA Neighborhood
Council Issues. Here's a little about our mission, and a bit of
information I think will help clarify how to use the e-group.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mission / Goals / Purpose
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LA Neighborhood Council Issues (LANCissues e-group) has been established
separately and independently of any other group, organization or
Council ... but we'll be as inclusive as possible and cooperate
with them all.
The original membership consisted of stakeholders from across LA
who'd convened after a recent Alliance of Neighborhood Councils
meeting. They requested I set up an e-group.
I see its main function as that of an ALERT GROUP, more than a place
for back and forth discussion … but how it's used will be up to
the members.
Please feel free to invite any and all parties you think will be
interested in the LA Neighborhood Council Issues effort to voluntarily
join the e-group. We'll encourage members to "sign" their posts
with their full name and the name of the Council (or group) to which
they belong.
I'll be moderating this, and reserve the right, on behalf of the
group, to deny membership to anyone who behaves in an unseemly manner.
Taunting, diatribes, flaming and attacks will not be tolerated here,
and may result in banishment from further participation.
I know we're all hoping that the LANCissues e-group can become a
meaningful tool with which the Neighborhood Councils will share
vital information about the many regional and citywide issues that
will need to be tracked by our communities.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Joining / Using LANCissues
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You can easily get to the Yahoo Group home by using the URL below:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LANCissues
This is the home page of the e-group, where you'll find all group
posts archived, and access to other files and support documents.
To invite others to the group, which we encourage, is simple. Just
send them to the URL above, where they can read the group's description
before making a decision. Otherwise they can go directly to the
"sign-up" page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LANCissues/join
When you get a post that's from the group, hitting "reply" will
send a message back to the group (and all its members). You'll see
the group email address displayed in the "send to" section of your
reply.
This is what you'll use: LANCissues@yahoogroups.com
Individual members can be emailed separately from the group by using
their personal email address, which appear in the "from" box of
the original post. Just check that this is the ONLY address appearing
in your reply, if you wish to send a personal, private message.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Various Delivery Methods
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If the group begins to get popular in the future, I suggest you
consider changing your Message Delivery method from "Individual
Emails" (which is the default setting and sends you each post separately)
to "Daily Digest."
The latter, the "Daily Digest" method, may be more comfortable for
some stakeholders since it compiles all posts from a 24-hour period
together, and sends them to you in one single easy-to-use email
each day. I use this method for several of the many groups to which
I belong, and it cuts way down on my inbox and the time it takes
to stay current.
A member can also select a "No Email" option, which would require
them to go to the group homepage to read posts.
We request that posts be kept short and to the point, and that any
documents of long length be stored in the file system provided to
all with group membership. Just refer to them in your post.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Membership / Inviting Others
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our membership is completely open. Everyone is invited to be a part
of this, and Yahoo provides handy sets of HTML code that can be
easily inserted to an existing webpage, inviting stakeholders to
join us. To see them go to the following URL:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LANCissues/promote
Perhaps our Neighborhood Councils and other groups will consider
adding this simple-to-use invitation to their websites.
I'll be doing so at my own LA Community Policing nonprofit organization
for example, under my well-known website's Neighborhood Council
links (LACP.org). I'll suggest my local Neighborhood Council(s)
do the same thing, and will offer them an invitation.
Otherwise you can just copy and paste the contents of this post
and email it as an invitation to individuals or groups.
Here's hoping we can begin the process!
Yours in service,
Bill Murray
