Re: Congress of Neighborhoods. Community Policing Session Added to Congress. Neighborhood Café Shows to Air on Channel 35.

CONGRESS OF NEIGHBORHOODS

Be sure and register online, by phone, or by fax to (213) 485-4608 for the exciting array of roundtable discussions at the next Congress of Neighborhoods on May 22 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Unlike past events, this one will be dominated by roundtable discussions at which the Neighborhood Council leaders themselves will share their ideas and best practices. Each session will be facilitated by someone who will ensure that, by the end, there are some tangible results.

As usual, parking will be free. Food and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

CONGRESS OF NEIGHBORHOODS – NEW SESSION OFFERED

In the afternoon, Bill Murray, chair of the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council Public Safety Committee, and of the Los Angeles Community Policing nonprofit organization will present “Public Safety and Security During the Budget Crunch.” Joining the Neighborhood Council leaders at this session will be Assistant Chief of Police Jim McDonnell and the President of the Police Commission, David Cunningham, III.

Those attending will discuss how law enforcement and the Neighborhood Councils can further enhance the concepts of community-based policing, and how stakeholders can participate in ensuring their own safety and quality of life despite the fiscal woes facing the city and state.

You may visit www.lacp.org for more information about community policing.

NEIGHBORHOOD CAFÉ SHOWS TO AIR ON CHANNEL 35

Show #1 airs:

May 17 and June 7 at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Each show is 30 minutes.

This is the introductory show for those who aren’t familiar with Neighborhood Councils. It features Doane Liu, Deputy Mayor for Operations and Greg Nelson in the first half. In the second half, Bill Robertson from the Department of Public Works explains the new written agreement that the department signed with four Neighborhood Councils that defines how they exchange information and deal with each other. Bradley, from the Glassell Park Neighborhood Council discusses matters from a Neighborhood Council perspective.

Show #2 airs:

May 24 and June 14 at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Now it gets interesting. Three senior lead officers and Bill Murray from the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council explain different things that Neighborhood Councils can do to reduce crime. Viewers are taken on a ride-along as the officer looks for potential crime scenes.

Show #3 airs:

May 31 at 11 a.m. only, despite what you see in the monthly program guide. June 28 at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

In this program, Horace Penman, president of CANNDU (Community and Neighbors for Ninth District Unity) and Carol Parks from the Emergency Preparedness Department talk about going beyond preparing individuals for the “big one” as they explain how entire neighborhoods can prepare themselves. Viewers are taken into the home of Grace Bradbury in the Harbor Gateway South Neighborhood Council area. Also, this will be subject at the upcoming Congress of Neighborhoods.
