Re: ADDITIONAL
SAFER COMMUNITIES MEASURE MEETINGS PLANNED.
As was mentioned
in the December 23 newsletter, the City Council and Mayor have asked
our department to help survey Neighborhood Councils regarding the
proposal to place a measure on the May 2005 city ballot that would
generate additional money each year for additional police officers
and other public safety improvements.
Given the very
short legal deadline (the City Council must act by January 26),
we are helping Neighborhood Council leaders organize meetings in
six different parts of the city in early January. Representatives
of the Police Department and Fire Department will attend, as will
the citys fiscal experts. Everyone who has something to learn
or something to say is invited. You dont even need to know
what a Neighborhood Council is.
The citys
goal is to provide attendees with information sheets and the questionnaire
a couple of days before the first meeting. This newsletter and all
subsequent ones regarding these meetings will be on our home page
at www.lacityneighborhoods.com.
The input will
be gathered and analyzed by city staff, and provided to the City
Council. Dates when the City Council and its committees will discuss
this issue have not yet been set. One place to go for up-to-date
information is Bill Murrays community policing website at
www.lacp.org.

It would help
if you could supply us with your questions in advance so that we
can have the answers ready.
Please understand
that involving the Neighborhood Councils and the public at this
early stage in the process is a new one. Normally, the public wouldnt
be involved until the first committee meeting.
