Re: UPDATES ON CITYWIDE ELECTION PROCEDURES/SAFER COMMUNITIES MEASURE

CITYWIDE ELECTION PROCEDURES

The Citywide Election Procedures Working Group has finished its work. It considered the recommended changes of the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners and finalized their report to the City Council.

The final document (31 pages) and a cover letter from City Clerk Frank Martinez can be found on our home page.

It will be discussed on Tuesday, January 18 at 2 p.m. in City Hall by the Education and Neighborhoods Committee.

SAFER COMMUNITIES MEASURE

The 6th and final community meeting was on Thursday in Westchester. It was a record breaker with 71 attendees. Once again, the CAO received comments and opinions that covered the full range of options. The CAO will be working the weekend to finalize their report. They are reading each every survey, including all of the hand-written comments.

This report will be considered by a joint meeting of the Public Safety Committee and Budget and Finance Committee on Tuesday, January 18 at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber. A date for it to be heard by the full City Council has not been set. The soonest date would be Friday.

As soon as the report is made available to me on Tuesday, I will post it on our home page, and send an e-mail notice to everyone.

To answer some process questions that have come up:

Councilman Smith’s chief of staff appeared at the Central Area meeting, made a presentation, and answered questions. The CAO made a best effort to explain this and other options at the other meetings.

The survey was designed to give people an opportunity to express their opposition to any tax, to say that don’t want the police to get any money, and present the widest range of alternatives, which even included a proposal that the City take over the Gas Company. From what I could tell, nobody left any of the meetings feeling that they hadn’t had an opportunity to be heard, except for one lady who came late, and didn’t get called upon before leaving early.
