Community Budget Survey Featured in the Los Angeles Times

The Los Angeles Times recently did an article on the Community Budget Survey and its importance to the City.  If you haven't already taken the Budget Survey, p lease fill out a survey English or Spanish.  The due date to submit Community Budget Surveys has been extended to January 31, 2009.  We ask that Neighborhood Councils set aside the time to schedule a "Budget Survey Presentation" for their Project Coordinator and Budget Representative in their January meetings as well as make the survey and website link available to their stakeholders.

The surveys capture important community input to help determine the 2009-2010 City of Los Angeles budget priorities when we are facing many challenges, including the uncertain impact of the turbulent national economy.  The Mayor and the leaders of the City's 89 Neighborhood Councils use the survey information to better understand the unique needs of each of the City's regions. There is still an opportunity to make your voice heard on budget priorities.  For more information or if you need assistance with the online survey, please contact your Project Coordinator at (213) 485-1360.

NUSA Is Accepting Submissions for the 2009 Neighborhood of the Year Awards
Neighborhoods, USA (NUSA) is accepting submissions for its competition for the 2009 Neighborhood of the Year Award.  The 2009 Neighborhood of the Year Awards program will recognize exceptional accomplishments by neighborhood organizations during 2008.

Awards will be given in three categories -
1) Physical Revitalization/Beautification in a Single Neighborhood;
2) Social Revitalization/Neighborliness in a Single Neighborhood; and
3) Multi-Neighborhood Project Partnerships.

Judging will be based on the extent of innovation, grassroots participation and capacity building exhibited by the nominated organization.

This year marks the 25th year that NUSA will recognize the outstanding work of neighborhood organizations from all across the United States, particularly for their efforts to improve the quality of life in their communities. A distinguished panel of judges will select four finalists in each category.  Finalists will be invited to make presentations at the 2009 NUSA Conference to be held May 21- 23, 2009 in Spokane, Washington, where a new panel of judges will then select a winner in each category plus an overall grand prize winner.  Eligibility requirements and application guidelines can be downloaded from the NUSA website: www.nusa.org 2009 Summit on Creating Disaster Resilient Communities on Thursday, January 15th This interactive summit will convene nonprofits, faith-based organizations, business, media and local government to discuss our emergency management system and how to better integrate our efforts so we're collectively prepared for disasters in a way that protects the most vulnerable - the poor, the elderly, the disabled, and immigrant populations.  Join community leaders, ethnic media, and disaster experts for this vital conversation, which includes the opportunity to work with business consultants to create a plan for continuing your organization's work during a disaster.
