A Call To Action

The Board of Neighborhood Commissioners (Commission) is urging every NC Board member to immediately communicate to the City Council the serious impact of the proposed budget cuts to the NC Funding Program as proposed by the Budget & Finance Committee.
The Committee recommended allocation of only 1 million dollars to fund the NC System for fiscal year 2009-2010, which breaks down to just over $11,000 per year. The Neighborhood Council system is important to the City, and the effects of such drastic funding cuts will be felt throughout.
It is suggested that every NC Board member prepare a brief, two-minute statement that conveys the consequences of the proposed cuts to their NC. The volunteer corps of NC people has been dealt a near fatal blow, and we need NC Board members to make their voices heard.
Neighborhood Council Board members are also urged to attend the Budget & Finance Committee , Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 1:00 PM and provide public comments about the impact of the cuts before these recommendations are approved and go to City Council.
Also, you may want to consider the introduction of the following motion to your Board agenda. Many Boards are calling emergency meetings to do this.
The Venice Neighborhood Council has created a template for a formal resolution. Other NC's may wish to use it as well for their own purposes:
"WHEREAS the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee will be recommending to City Council that the Neighborhood/Community Council funding program be reduced to a total of $1M for next year - this roughly breaks down to $11,200 instead of the $50,000 per Council; and WHEREAS such a funding cut would effectively eviscerate the ________ Neighborhood Council's mission and ability to function under the City Charter;
BE IT RESOLVED that the ________ NC actively lobby the City Council and Mayor to preserve Neighborhood/Community Council funding at a level of no less than $45,000 per year;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ________ NC encourage its stakeholders to write and/or call their Councilmember, the Mayor, and other City Council members to demand the same; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ________ NC work in cooperation with all other Neighborhood and Community Councils to oppose these proposed cuts." |
