LAFD CERT Code of Conduct

The LAFD CERT program is the most active and respected CERT program in the nation. This has been achieved due to the dedication and commitment of our members, who continually strive to be a resource to the Los Angeles communities.

You represent the CERT program to new members, to the public, and to those to whom we render our services. It is important to portray a positive image.

As a volunteer with the LAFD CERT program, you are expected to comply with the LAFD CERT Code of Conduct.

Read it and download a copy at http://www.cert-la.com/code-of-conduct.htm

Quarterly Division Trainings

Sign up at http://www.cert-la.com/quarterly-trainings.htm

NOTE: If you don't sign up online, we cannot guarantee space for you.  If you sign up and can't  attend, let us know.

We offer one topic, three times, in three different locations in Los Angeles (once in each of our City Fire Divisions) over a 3-month period. That way, CERT members have three different opportunities to attend the training in three different locations. We have four training topics each year.

Training will be either conducted by LAFD members of the CERT Unit or by qualified specialists on the subject matter.

Quarterly Division Trainings are open to  all graduates of CERT training programs.

Los Angeles CERT members must submit completed CERT Volunteer Enrollment Forms prior to the event.

CERT members from other agencies must submit copies of their CERT IDs or CERT certificates prior to the event.

Fax all paperwork to 818-804-5302.

We have been doing tests of the automated call-out system for Division Call-Outs. We will no longer use the Battalion Call-Out System.

If you have signed up for a Division Call-Out Team or a REDY Team, and you did not get a test call, let us know. If you want to be on a call-out team, please sign up at http://www.cert-la.com/call-out-register.htm

Regarding Earthquakes

NBC recently broadcast "10.5," a two-part miniseries about a series of unrealistic earthquakes, culminating in an earthquake that separates a portion of southern California from the mainland.

While the miniseries contained many of the myths that we have worked to dispel, the attention creates an educational opportunity.

The Earthquake Country Alliance, the Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have created a series of web pages addressing the miniseries, to separate fact from movie fiction.

The pages are at http://www.earthquakecountry.info/10.5

The web pages include:
* links to official comments from state and federal organizations
* a list of many of the errors in the miniseries and why they are wrong
* earthquake preparedness information
* lesson plans to help teachers respond to their students' concerns or questions
* links to many other earthquake-related websites
* the online version of the updated "Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country."

The idea is that if you have questions, or if others ask you questions, you can simply refer to these web pages at http://www.earthquakecountry.info/10.5.

If you have questions about the website, think they omitted something important, or want to make any other comments, please contact Ilene Cooper at icooper@usc.edu or Wendy Shindle at wshindle@usgs.gov, who have worked together to create this resource.
