Red Flag Days Teams
In an attempt to increase public safety, the Los Angeles Fire
Department and Department of Transportation have created a program to
remove illegally parked vehicles in posted locations within the Very
High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Several months ago, Station
Commanders were asked to survey their districts and identify critical
areas where parked vehicles could delay citizens trying to evacuate
and fire companies attempting to gain access during a Brush Incident.
Station Commanders were asked to identify areas such as very narrow
roads, hairpin turns, tight curves, and key intersections that if not
cleared of vehicles would create a choke point.
The LAFD is requesting the assistance of CERT volunteers to support
them in notifying the public regarding the RED FLAG No Parking
Priority Program. Help will be required when a Red Flag Day is
declared for Los Angeles City. Only Battalions 2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12,
14, 17 & 18 will be affected, but volunteers from any Battalion can help.
How often are Red Flag Days implemented in Los Angeles City?
On average, 3-7 days per year, usually August-September.
When would CERT help?
It is anticipated CERT would help from 0700-1000 (7am-10am) on each
declared Red Flag Day. It is possible that CERT would be asked to
help the prior evenings.
What will CERT do to help?
CERT has been asked to assist the Fire Department by placing
informational notices on vehicles in the affected areas. LAFD Engine
Companies will also be placing notices.
Get more information and fill out the form at
http://www.cert-la.com/red-flag-days.htm if you are at least eighty
percent sure of your commitment. It is understood that circumstances
can arise that prevent your participation, but it is important the
Fire Department can count on you.
If you signed up on a CERT Community Meeting for this, please sign up again.
Thank you.
