Tired In San Pedro
- community policing in the "bad" part of San Pedro

April 24th

Anyone out there interested in starting a neighborhood watch group in the "bad" part of San Pedro (i.e., on the ocean side of Pacific Avenue)?

Anyone out there as tired of the blatant narcotics trafficking and pimping going on 24/7 as I am, and ready to do something about it?

Ms. Tired in San Pedro

Here's how I replied:

Dear Ms. Tired in San Pedro:

San Pedro is located in Harbor Division, so you're in luck. I've recently visited your area. Not only do you have a terrific new Area Commander there, Captain Julie D. Nelson, but the Community-Police Advisory Board (C-PAB) is both energetic and engaged.

You'll find them quite willing to help you out. Be sure to ask when and where the C-PAB meets, and for the name and cell phone number of your Senior Lead Officer (SLO), because he or she can help you get a Neighborhood Watch started, and will attend the meetings regularly.

By the way, I got the following information directly from the LACP.org site:

Harbor Division police station is located at 2175 John S. Gibson Blvd., San Pedro.

The Harbor Division phone number is 310 / 548-7605.

The Community Relations Office number is 310 / 548-7600.

You have a civilian C-PAB contact person listed on the site too, Lynda Gritmon (liaison), who gives out her personal number as 310 / 530-7911.

Please feel free to call me directly if you want further help.

Yours in service,

Bill Murray

Try calling your area SLO and advising him/her of the problems in your area ... then I also suggest that you attend your neighborhood CPAB meetings and then get involved with you neighborhood council as they are developing now.

This may be more effective than waiting for your area to get neighborhood watch program. Hold your representatives accountable for non-actions in your area as this is what community policing should be about ... RESULTS !!!

Perhaps you can share with us your efforts with Harbor Division to get enforcement done. Was there any response from your contacts at LAPD, assuming you have done so?
