Today's SPECIAL GUEST is Paulie O'Bryne, Canadian hockey player and abuse survivor. In 2006, Paulie was a 21 year old coach / trainer of a team in the Minor Hockey League. Although his perpetrator was convicted and given a short prison term, Paulie now tells us the course of his life has been changed forever, his goals, dreams and ambitions crushed. Originally from Nova Scotia and now living in Ontario, Mr O'Byrne is drawing attention to the problem of sexual assault against men and boys in Canada, where 1 in 5 males are victimized. At a golf tournament with fellow survivor and hockey great Theo Fleury, O'Bryne came up with the idea to stick handle a hockey ball across Canada to raise awareness about these alarming, and has he puts it "unacceptable and disgusting" statistics. Special guest Mark Douglass

Friday
12/09/2011
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

Recommended show

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Mark Douglass, abuse survivor, author, speaker and life coach. A retired attorney, Mark was the first male survivor of childhood sexual abuse in our nation to successfully sue for his injuries. In 1988, a civil jury awarded Mark a verdict of over $1,000,000 against the close family friend who molested him. His book, "Flashbacks of Abuse; How a machine gun toting sociopath freed me from the chains of my childhood," is autobiographical. Although Mr Douglass saw numerous therapists in his earlier adulthood, he marks his awakening as following an incident in 2004, when, while traveling in Europe with his twelve-year-old child, they were almost killed as they accidentally stumbled into the middle of a gangland kidnapping. The shock brought on PTSD that eventually helped him review and re-frame his perspective on his life. The narrow brush with death, coupled with the author's growing awareness of his own mortality, proved to be a valuable gift as he worked his way through the pain and confusion of his past with the help of his therapist, a retired police officer. Mark seeks to dispel numerous myths about child abuse, and to teach several truths, among them, that the manner in which a survivor's family responds to abuse plays a critical role in how the incident will affect his recovery. Special guest Brian Lewis
Wednesday
12/07/2011
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

Recommended show
Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Brian Lewis, a survivor of sexual assault while serving in the American military. During a tour of duty in the US Navy, Petty Officer Lewis, a submariner, was sexually assaulted by a superior non–commissioned officer. While the predator was known to the command for committing these types of acts before, he was never charged. But Brian was unfairly discharged from the service with a diagnosis of his having a "personality disorder." He's still fighting the Veteran's Administration for appropriate treatment for his PTSD, a direct result of his experiencing Military Sexual Trauma (MST). In 2010, there were 19,000 cases of sexual assault reported in the military, resulting in some 3,000 courts martial. Although Brian was subsequently granted disability, he continues to struggle with a frustrating and self-protecting military medical services system. He supports the efforts of Jackie Speier (D-CA, 12 District) who in November 2011 introduced the STOP Act, H.R. 3435, a bill that seeks to revise how the military deals with cases of sexual trauma. Please see: Service Women's Action Network ServiceWomen.org, the Military Rape Crisis Center StopMilitaryRape.org, and Protect our Defenders ProtectOurDefenders.com/main where there's a petition drive in support of these issues.

All alone in the world Karen eventually become a type ‘A’ person with a heart on the outside. Inside, her soul was dying a slow death .. but she was too busy to notice. It was only in January 2011, when Karen stumbled upon the “Survivor to Thriver” manual from The Morris Center’s ASCA program (www.ASCAsupport.org), that the light bulb went off, and in May 2011, Ms Mills started a support group in Santa Clarita, CA. for Adult Survivors of Child Abuse based on the ASCA program (www.ASCAsantaclarita.org).

Recommended show
Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Erin Merryn, the 26 year old child abuse survivor and advocate who began "a crusade to save the children of Illinois from the childhood I could not be saved from. It is a silent epidemic because we are not talking about it with children." Illinois Senate Bill 2843, know as "Erin's Law," was passed unanimously Feb 14, 2011, and has spawned a set of similar laws in several other states. The purpose of the law is to inform and protect students from sexual abuse, to mandate school districts implement and educate students on sexual abuse. School boards are instructed to adopt age appropriate curriculum on sexual abuse education to students grades pre-k through 5th grade. As Ms Merryn points out, "Growing up in Illinois public schools every year I was educated with my classmates on tornado drills, fire drills, bus drills, stranger danger, and learned the 8 ways to say "NO" to drugs through D.A.R.E." She continues, "As a child I never had to take cover because of a real tornado. I never had to stop, drop, and roll or run out of a burning building. I never had to evacuate a school bus due to an emergency, but I had the knowledge to know what to do if any of those situations happened. Where was the drill on how to escape a child molester? Where was the lesson plan on sexual abuse, safe touches, and safe secrets?" Please see the web site: www.ErinMerryn.net

Recommended show
Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Tim Fisher. Mr Fisher resides in the Las Vegas area and runs Juvenile Justice Now. More than 100,000 sex offenders are in violation of state and federal laws by not registering their current addresses with local law enforcement. The Juvenile Justice Now web site operates as a public service, and uses the Internet by way of displaying pictures of people who are currently not in compliance with current sex offender registration laws. Users are encouraged to keep the available information on registered offenders current and up to date. Tim cautions that each state has it's own information collection and privacy / confidentiality policies, as well as policies / disclaimers / terms and conditions for access to information contained in state sex offender web sites (review individual state conditions of use). Megan's Law, signed into law in 1996 by President Clinton, allows states discretion in establishing criteria for disclosure, but compels them to make private and personal information on registered sex offenders available to the public. ~~ Please see the web site at: www.JuvenileJusticeNow.com

Tonight's SPECIAL TOPIC is "Ask not what the children can someday do for you .. ask what you can do for the children .. NOW!!" The air-waves have been occupied recently by story after story concerning the events at Penn State University, but the emphasis has been on a single high-powered sports program, driven by the personal experience of alumni and fans. Imagine if we can use the horror of these still-unfolding stories to highlight the need to prepare all our kids, from every walk of life, with the information, knowledge and tools they'll need, when at least 20% of them will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday. Conservatively speaking, at least 60 million Americans adults have suffered physical violence and / or been sexual traumatized in their youth. ~~ Please see our web site at: www.NAASCA.org

Tonight's SPECIAL TOPIC is the ongoing investigation at Penn State University, and the many issues surrounding it. Bill and Carl Hart reviewed the news as it has been revealed that an football team assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky, released years ago but still enjoying his reputation, has finally been exposed as a pedophile. At least eight young men had been raped over a 15 year period of time. Yet officials, who had been informed, either chose not to say anything or did the minimum official reporting of the crimes required, allowing the situation to exist far longer than it should have. Emotions are high over these issues, with many believing that famed college football coach, Joe Paterno, fired from his position yesterday, shares in the responsibility. ~~ Please see our web site at: www.NAASCA.org

A Fight to Save Two American Kids" that describes her efforts to save two children who where being abused. Millions of dollars are spent every year by Family Services in an attempt to repair broken families in the United States. There are approximately 500,000 children living in foster homes, kinship homes, or group homes. There are probably just as many who should be in the system. However, there is just no place to send them.

Special guest Gidon, from Israel
Tuesday
11/08/2011
8pm EST, 5pm PAC

Recommended show
Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Gidon, 60, who surprised us by calling in from Jerusalem, Israel, to talk about repressed memories of child abuse that he had recently uncovered. He had been waiting for the right evening to call us from the other side of the world. Gidon has been in therapy a long time, 26 years, yet the issue of his molestation as an infant had never been addressed. Its not unusual for the mind of a child as young as Gidon was to repress the memories of such experiences. Full 20% of sexually abused kids are younger than 8 years old. Many never tell, others simply don't remember, and sometimes these memories will unexpectedly emerge decades later. We are always grateful when people trust our group enough to share their story with us, especially if its for the first time.

"When I was in incest recovery," Ms. McKinnon writes, "living in a women's shelter, married to my third abuser, suicidal, and fumbling my way in the dark, I thought, ‘If only I had a Lamplighter, someone who would show me the way.'" Some years later she remarried, but unfortunately this union would tear her once more into tiny pieces." Ms. Joyce, too, found herself unsafe under her stepfather's hands "in the grip of a complete madman, who was hell bent on destroying my life. Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Keith Smith -- author of Men In My Town. "After 34 years, I got the strength to break the silence about my abduction and sexual assault," said Keith. "Out of fear, shame and guilt, I'd been silent for over three decades, not sharing with anyone the story of what happened to me." He continues, "It's time to speak out to raise public awareness of male sexual assault, to let others know that they're not alone and to help victims and their families understand that the emotion, fear and memories that may still haunt them are not uncommon to those of us who have shared a similar experience." His program, “5 Steps You Can Take to Keep Kids Safe” has been discussed on radio and television programs, and was developed to help reduce the risk to children by educating adults on five key things. Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Cathering Heimdale -- She's the author of "Escape the Dragons Path" a novel that explores the worst things that can happen to a victim of abuse. “More than anything, I saw myself in my research," she says. "I was all over it — the panic attacks, the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the fear of feeling cornered. You can't bury that kind of emotion, and it wasn't until I began research on it that I slowly began to understand it, and to work my way through it.” Ms. Heimdale continues, "I felt validated, and I finally understood the psychology behind the mind of the abuse victim — as well as the abuser — and the necessity of freedom from fear for recovery.” (see the web site: www.trianglerockenterprises.weebly.com)

Thursday

Tonight's SPECIAL GUEST is Hank Estrada -- In his book, UNHOLY COMMUNION, Lessons Learned from Life among Pedophiles, Predators and Priests, Hank Estrada takes us through the horrors of being sexually abused in his family of origin by a trusted uncle only to be followed by a second experience of sexual abuse by a trusted priest during his seminary training in the religious order of the Claretian Missionary Priests and Brothers. Estrada is candid not only about those who abused him but also about his own dark side that emerged as he tried to come to grips with the effects of the abuse and his own sexual orientation. This book is worthy of a careful reading by anyone, but especially by those who have doubts about the effects of sexual abuse of vulnerable young people by members of the clergy or about the systemic pattern of enabling these same abusers to violate additional vulnerable people. Community
Matters

.

LACP.org's
radio talk show
all about: "Community Matters" - the radio show
with host Bill Murray, LA Community Policing founder (LACP.org)

Community based policing provides a forum for the dissemination of information, sharing of ideas and suggesting of ways Americans can become engaged in making our streets safer, & improve the quality of life.

"Community Matters" has two meanings. We'll discuss issues that concern the community, including local and current event topics, and encourage our participants and listeners to understand the important role volunteers and activists play. We all can make a difference on our block, in our neighborhood, in the towns and cities where we live, in our states, in our country and, finally, in today's world-wide "global village," on the lives of those around us, near and far.

The host of "Community Matters" is Bill Murray, founder of Los Angeles Community Policing (LACP.org), which began as his reaction to 9-11 and has since become the world's biggest grassroots effort devoted to community based policing. The web site features some 2500 archived pages of articles and information and has been continuously published since early 2002.

"I have long felt that America has an untapped inner resource, her people," says Bill, "whose contributions could be enormous if moderately supported. The universe responds when folks serve their communities, taking social service positions within them. All participation is important, and WHAT one does matters less than the fact that everyone can, and should, do SOMEthing."

"Community-based policing (policing with a small "p") means leaving something in better shape than you find it," Bill continues. "It's not just about public safety, although crime and it's prevention is certainly a prominent issue for LACP. But it also speaks to the many ways a community can become involved in watching over each other, participating in self governance, lending a hand in neighborhood projects and improving the quality of life."

We're hoping you'll join us regularly for lively discussions and topics that matter .. to you and to your community.
