The terrible earthquake devastation we recently saw in China could easily happen here in the Los Angeles region.  We all need to become as prepared as possible .. not "in case" but because we WILL have "the BIG one" .. and it could come at any time.

At least that's the opinion of all the experts.

California Senator Barbara Boxer said it this way:

New Data Available on California Earthquakes
by Senator Barbara Boxer - May 7, 2008

Here are a couple of recent local articles that speak to the matter:

Preparing for The Big One
LA Daily News - May 17, 2008

LA Quake Scenario: 1,800 dead, area in flames
The Associated Press - May 21, 2008

On Tuesday, July 29th, we had yet another little wake-up call .. the 5.4 earthquake in Chino Hills.  We were fortunate in that it caused little damage yet was felt from the ocean coast to Las Vegas!

Shaken, and Stirred
LA Times - OPINION - July 30, 2008

Staying Safe in Future Earthquakes
by Wendy Greuel - CD2 - July 30, 2008

The issue is urgent.

Earthquakes can happen anywhere,
but our area's especially susceptible
& unique. Check out the map below:
.
This map shows relative earthquake shaking hazards in the United States and Puerto Rico. During a 50-year time period, the probability of strong shaking increases from very low (white), to moderate (blue, green, and yellow), to high (orange, pink, and red).      Map source: USGS

A number of residents from the Montecito Heights Improvement Association, along with LA Community Policing, have asked the knowledgeable folks from Caltech University in Pasadena to help us put on a seminar on the threat .. and what can be done about it.

The Lincoln Heights and Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Councils are our co-sponsors:

Disaster Preparedness Seminar, 8/16

Hello, my name is Roy Payan.

I am President of the Montecito Heights Improvement Association and Montecito Heights Disaster Preparedness Coordinator.

We in Montecito Heights are sponsoring a FREE Earthquake Preparedness Seminar to be held on Aug 16 at Lincoln High School in historic North East Los Angeles (map provided below).

With permission from MHIA, and the assistance of Los Angeles Community Policing, I started putting this event together back in April, and one month later the China Quake struck.

It was eerily similar to what we should expect.

We have to start preparing our communities now. All the experts will tell you it's no longer a matter of, "If this will happen, but when?"

Come see the presentations and sign up for a CPR / First Aid class with our very own neighbor Carl McGraven.  Also sign up for Red Cross Classes and the Montecito Heights CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).

I would like to invite you to attend and learn about the dangers our communities face in the event of a major earthquake.

The Seminar takes place:

All of this is in preparation for The Great Southern California "ShakeOut" .. an unprecedented week of events this November that will inspire Southern Californians to get ready for big earthquakes and keep our disasters from becoming catastrophes.  ShakeOut will involve residents, businesses, communities, and schools in the largest-ever emergency response exercise and public drill, where millions of Southern Californians practice what to do during and after a major earthquake.

Here's the associated website:

The Great Southern California ShakeOut
November 12–16, 2008

The effort at Caltech has been greatly enhanced and assisted by the US Geological Service and by USC.  Together they've developed models, videos, data and suggestions regarding California earthquakes and being prepared for "The Big One."

As we said, it's not a matter of "if" an unusually large and devastating earthquake will strike our region, its only a matter of time.

All are invited to this timely FREE EVENT !!!
