We think it's wonderful that the various neighborhoods around
LA are finding ways to reach out to community members by using
the internet. As more and more residents are connected on the
web this will become even more important.
In addition many areas have e-groups, similar to the one we
have at LACP, where individuals can quickly communicate information
about local issues.
EDITOR'S NOTE: For more about these please see the article
about our LACP
e-group. |
A
community website can be a big boon to an area, serving as a one
stop arena for all kinds of news and contact information, all readily
accessible to anyone who cares to stop by. Community events, newsletters,
listings of local businesses, emergency phone numbers and more are
only a click or two away.
We thought we'd begin to feature such community websites as examples
of how neighborhoods are using the internet.
Van
Buren Place - This website is sponsored by the Van Buren
Place Community Restoration Association of Los Angeles, California.
The association, which was founded in 1980, is a volunteer block
club in the heart of the historic West Adams district, just south
and west of downtown, near the University of Southern California.
West Adams is a section of the inner city with a great history.
At one and the same time it is a unique neighborhood of stately
old homes that recall an earlier century, and a core community in
the new ethnic diversity that is reshaping Los Angeles. It's a small
town in the big city where everyone knows their neighbors, and a
marketplace of cultural exchange where the largest ethnic groups
are Latino and African-American.
We hope you enjoy the site.
Please let its webmaster, Leslie Evans, know what you think:

The
webmaster of the Van Buren Place website, Leslie Evans, reports
that the effort really began to take off with the inclusion
of his local news and calendar sections. It has a restaurant
guide, lists of local craftspeople, and some history of West
Adams.

But don't let that fool you. There are layers and layers to
this evergrowing grasssroots effort, all constantly updated.

If you'd like us to feature your neighborhood's website just send
us an email through the link below, and tell us a little about it.
We'll need the website's internet address (it's URL) and the contact
info for the webmaster (email address and phone number) ... and
a Thomas Guide coordinate would be appreciated.
We'll keep a running list of all the neighborhood sites we're sent!
