This is YOUR site
... check out what you're saying below !

What you think of LACP.org (Los Angeles Community Policing) matters a great deal to us, because we consider this YOUR forum, not ours. To be really useful, the information shared here needs to be coming from a variety of sources.

We are hoping that over time we'll be able to offer input from each of the C-PABs and SLOs, LAPD Volunteers, Neighborhood Watch people and community members new to Community Policing.

We also seek comments and criticisms from rank and file LAPD Officers, as well as other City officials.

All information sent to us will be displayed anonymously, unless specific permission is granted to use the author's name.

NOTE: We'd love to have you send your opinions as a Letter to the Editor as well. We also encourage participation in the LACP e-group, and have made joining it easier then ever.

The response to the launch of the site has been very enthusiastic ... overwhelmingly so. It seems, as we'd hoped, that LACP.org is fulfilling a need.

So ... here are just some of the comments you've made.

The ones at the top are those we've received most recently:

You are much appreciated and never taken for granted.

This is an excellent site, effort, and informational source, so many, many thanks to you for your involvement, creative skills, and success at bringing this site to fruition ... personal support and involvement with an effective police force and its officers have in maintaining a secure and healthy city, neighborhoods, homes, and businesses is a vital ... I look forward to contributing time and money to your efforts and that of the LACP; keeping open lines of communications is foremost!

very nice. informative. good job :)

It was a great pleasure to meet you at the Hubbard College meeting. I look forward to working together on projects for the community please keep me in mind for any project that may be coming up.

Dear Bill, It was a pleasure speaking with you last night and learning the many things you are doing in the community. Thank you for attending our meeting. I have reviewed your marvelous web site ...

Dear Bill, ... I went all through your website. It is fantastic. What you are doing is well worth supporting! I'm both impressed and inspired by what you are doing ...

(after posting an article about Youth Against MS) Thank you so much! Your website looks great, and it is so wonderful to see all the amazing things that your organization is doing for the community. Good luck in all your efforts and thank you for supporting YAMS!

It's so easy to support your work with PayPal.com. Best wishes, T. PS: Congratulations to Mary Lou Trevis!

We at Glo Laden Concepts would like to help out in your "holding events that promote donations " situation by Donating.... at least 5 pairs of our reflective glove -The ORIGINAL GLO GLOV! at these events. Please advise our company owner when you would like these shipped and where! Thank you for the opportunity to support you!

Thank you for the police contact. I could have used it yesterday. Incident in frint of my home. I guess you don't realize how important it is until you need it.

You are too good to be true. I know most of us are attempting to make the world a better place, in our own way, but you excell in so many ways. I really appreciate your example.

I would like to help in improving the quality of life in SFV, eliminate gangs, drugs and violence and most importantly clean up certain areas of this city. Whatever I can do to help in my spare time let me know. I walk for 3 hours passing out flyers to the neighbors. We need to get more young people involved. The Community-Policing Program is a great idea.

Wow, another quick email reply - thank you!

Dear Mr. Murray - Thank you for the very prompt confirmation email !.. I am a regular visitor of the LACP website and think it's a wonderful, interesting and informative website. Thank you for creating and maintaining it. I am trying to start a neighborhood watch group and will inform my neighbors of the website once the neighborhood watch is up and running.

Dear Bill - Thanks so much for the prompt reply! It sounds like you’ve got a wonderful organization committed to making a difference in our community. I applaud you and your colleagues for your hard work and diligent efforts. Thanks for all of your help!

Thank you for helping get the word out about the Hyperion Bridge Attacker. I am hoping that ... MANY parents and community members receive the information that is needed to catch the guy but most importantly to keep our children safe. It’s been an interesting journey. I’ve made a few new and wonderful contacts for community policing and that’s a good thing. We’ll just keep plugging along just as you are.

Those of us on CPAB do agree with some of your findings.

I think what you are coordinating is great and I'm in full support of what you are doing! I will support your endeavor however I can.

I am a student at LACC and my major is Criminal Justice. I recently came upon your website and I must tell you there was a lot of great information on it!!! I hope that you can add me to your e-mail list ASAP!!! Thank you very much!!! I can also use this valuable information for my classes and special reports on Chief Bratton.

Hi Mr. Murray: I visited your URL and was impressed at how extensive it is. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Many thanks for all of your support and for your friendfship which I prize!

Thanks Bill, for all you do. I try to check out the site a few times per week ...

We are still very much on track with Community Policing ... Thanks for keeping the site going and interesting.

Web site looks great.

(after a "thank you" was sent for a contribution) My pleasure to share; if we all do a little then a few will not have to do so much.

Take care and keep up the good work, you are making a positive difference.

Thank you as always for your time and all of your help over the last week, it is so greatly appreciated.

LACP Dear Mr. Murray, This web site is truly worthy of non-profit status. Congratulations to and your Board of Directors/staff.

(re: Certificate of Appreciation) I didn't get a chance to see you at the end of the meeting, but I just wanted to congratulate you on getting the well deserved recognition last night. It was clear from the response of the audience that I am not the only one who appreciates all the hard work you do. Its always refreshing to meet people like you who care so much about the issues relating to law enforcement and community policing. As they say "keep on keepin' on" ...

(re: Certificate of Appreciation) Congratulations on your award from the Police Commission last night. It is richly deserved.

Thank you as always for your time and all of your help over the last week, it is so greatly appreciated.

(after sending a contribution) No city needs intelligent community policing more than Los Angeles. I'm pleased to help this effort in a small way.

I think your website is GREAT. I am a neighborhood block captain in the Hollenbeck area. We just recently formed a neighborhood watch. We have a great SLO who is working with us to improve our neighborhood. The whole concept of Community Based Policing is just phenomenal. The program works! I plan to volunteer in some capacity at Hollenbeck station. We appreciate our officers more than they know. Thank you for adding me to this great source of information. I look foward to receiving the emailed info. Thank you again for your great service and a big THANK YOU to the men and women of the Hollenbeck station.

Last year when I ran for city council one of my platforms was "bring back full community policing" - I miss it. I understand the last chief was not helpful and even wanted it dismantled. It is so important that there be close contact between the police and the community - this helps eliminate so many problems that happen regularly. I really think community policing is the best way to fight crime. That and of course economic and social justice, which will help eliminate the need to commit crime in the first place. Peace to you.

(PayPal request for suport) I'm impressed. I like this grass roots idea, and the articles for people to read and be educated. Continuous education, that is the era we live in. Life long learning. I'm broke, but impressed. I'll give after the first of the year.

(PayPal request for suport) I am forwarding this onto everyone in hopes that we can give some support. As you know, this ongoing website is a great source of information to all communities. If you have never seen the website, please take a moment to visit it and see for yourself. We are all strapped for money, I know, but a few dollars here and there would help immensely.

... thank you for all the support you have given [my neighborhood] on this and other issues that we are still facing. Together, we will prevail. Thank you for caring the way you do and for helping us clean up in many aspects the community where we live, play and work. May God bless you and yours!

Bill, can we clone you? ha ha... We need several hundred Bills running around.

You do a great job and I thought you should know.

The thanks deserve to go to you and all of your hard work and dedication. I'm sure it's not said often enough, but all you have done is much appreciated by all of us who are concerned about LAPD and Community Policing and I thank you.

My pleasure (to participate)! I really enjoy your newsletters. Full of great information!

Bill, The fact that you've managed to create and administer such a great Web site is inspiration to all of us struggling community volunteers! Keep up the awesome work.

Dear Bill, Just finished reading the (too many) compliments on your website, now here's another one. Keep the information coming on the issue of "next Chief" ... you're giving us insight on the process of choosing a Chief. Thanks, T.

Bill, The LACP website is outstanding. My compliments to everyone involved. The site is incredibly informative, EXTREMELY fast & easy to navigate, and organized in a way that is both logical and telegraphic. I find your section on Neighborhood Councils to be especially helpful. Unfortunately, much of what the City puts out is written in such "bureaucratic-ese" that it's laborious trying to plow through and decipher what's actually being said. You manage to distill info into key points and articulate things in an easily understood fashion. Out of curiosity, who designed the LACP website and who's the Webmaster? Regards, CG --- EDITOR'S REPLY: We have a website staff of one. It's kind comments like yours that keep me going. Humbly yours in service, Bill

Keep up the good work. I am taking your web site info to my traffic meeting at West Los Angeles Station for the members who attend. There are about 25 to 30 of us.

Dear Bill, et al: Love the site. Please add me to your list. In Joy!

Excellent issue, Bill. (Homegrown Terrorist Question of the Week) This is a very important topic. WELL DONE!

Good to see you this morning at the commission meeting. I meant to tell you how helpful the LACP calendar is. I check it weekly. Keep up the great work!

Mr. Murray this web site is an inspiration & an education. The information, opinions and comments, especially those on the "LAPD new Chief search" and the community policing program are truly helpful. Thank you.

Bill, your site is very good and I was very glad to see it was in existence. I think you are on the right track. I have been concerned for some time that there is not enough community support to quickly change and improve the LAPD and make it a national leader in Community Policing, but your site has helped to change my mind. Thanks again.

THANKS BILL FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

Bill, your letters come as a reminder to continue to check your really great website. Please continue to do so, I enjoy getting reacquainted.

Bill, this is really great stuff. I'm so glad you're extending the invitation to the rest of the staff.

This is a GREAT website!!! You've outdone yourself!! I, too, was glad to meet you Saturday and look forward to future positive interactions.

Thank you for sending the note. I routinely visit the site - you are on top of the issues and provide a valuable resource for current information.

Congratulations for a much needed informational and important project!

Thank you, I hope to attend more of your events!

What a wonderful job you have done with the website!

Thanks for your good leadership and keeping us posted on the latest regarding community policing!

Thank you for all your efforts in helping Los Angeles.

Congratulations on your 501(c)3 status. Thanks also for doing a great service to our "fair city".

I really must commend you. From the looks of it you have really worked hard on this project and your doing a great job.

Bill, Thanks for keeping in touch! Thank you for your dedication to Community Policing and to the people of Los Angeles for developing and maintaining this website. It is a tremendous resource.

As always, I read all the new additions to the site... It just keeps getting better and better. I can see your dedication and service with each improvement. What you're giving to the community is awesome, and should be inspiring to those around you.

Hi Bill, This looks great. Good for you and hats off for all of your hard work on this project.

Tops -- again -- of course!!!

Congratulations Bill, [about the LACP Calendar] This is great for the community to know what's going on all around. I was at a community meeting last night and told everyone there to check it out.

Thanks for the reminder. As always your site is first class ...

Thanks for the update, Bill. This is truly wonderful work you're doing. I do take exception, however, with your statement that you haven't been able to pursue a "professional" career. What you're doing is about as "professional" as it gets, and ... I'm sorry to say that many of the "professionals" I've encountered in my 20 years of show business would be hard-pressed to create a 20th of the value you've already generated. You rock!

I really enjoy your website and you are going a great public service!

Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know I think the new look of your website is GREAT-much slicker and clearly organized than the original. It sports a new level of professionalism and credibility that is very powerful. Congratulations!

I just looked at the LACP website and all I can say is W O W !!!!!!!!! I thought it was great before but it was nothing compared to now. It is absolutely incredible.

Thank you for your continued efforts in this area. ("Gangs and Drugs" event) With a copy of the e-mail, I have referred your announcement to ... the Public Safety Bureau for the response and / or distribution.

I hope to be attending your forum on the 1st! We are starting to deal with youth being harassed at school ... which I was worrying about the extent of the issue ... I think the issue is not uncommon. And guess what the youth's reaction is???? Anger ... and guess where this leads ......... looking forward to June / Bravo.

Thank you for the information. It sounds like a great idea! ("Gangs and Drugs" event)

I thank you for your interest in community policing, and trying to solve the problem of violence within our City. Thank you for accepting my comments, it's frustration speaking! I've been involved in community policing since Day one, Graduated from the Academy and continue to promote change.

Bill, I am really impressed with the way the website is progressing, particularly the amount of updated information. With the COP selection being such an important issue for the organization, I think it's wonderful that you continue to seek community involvement and input, it will greatly enhance our relationship with all of the Los Angeles communities! Good job!

I agree that the C-PABs should be working closely with the Neighborhood Councils. I also believe the Department needs to start creating Department sponsored vehicles for C-PABs to work together on a regular basis and learn from one another ... I hope to see the day in the not too distant future where the Chief will be meeting with C-PAB representatives on a regular basis to LISTEN and share thoughts and concerns.

I qualify as a [Neighborhood Council] stakeholder in a number of categories and I have chosen the "non Government" organization in which to run. If elected I will represent C-PAB ... Keep up the good work.

I have read your website and find it very informative and think it will be a great asset to all of the communities. Thanks for sharing.

I'll remember the C-PAB article when we formally form our Neighborhood Council.

We were certified [as a Neighborhood Council] with Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Solano Canyon, El Pueblo and Forgotten Edge. A lot of the organizers are members of C-PABs or members of Little Tokyo Safety.

Bill, I just wanted to let you know again that I enjoy your web site. I have been getting a lot of good information from it. Thanks for your efforts.

Thank you for your E-mail. I always look forward to it.

Bravo, Bill -- as usual !!!

Great Job on the site. Great Service!

I'm so happy to be part of LACP organization. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and maybe we'll get our city back on track and stop all this bickering of big egos. Thanks again ...

Thank you so much for your updates. I really appreciate it.

I want to thank you for the fine work you do on behalf of our community.

I certainly appreciate your LACP website and I concur completely with your website article, "Acceptance is the Answer ...enough is enough..." Parks is on his way out ... The major question is, "Who will be our next Chief of Police?" It would be a good idea if former Deputy Chief Mark Kroeker were approached to apply for the job. I only met the man once at a Police/Community function, but I was really impressed by his bearing and his ability to connect with people. Granted, he is currently Chief of the Portland, Oregon Police Department, but that does not rule him out. In the five years that have elapsed, Mark Kroeker served in Bosnia putting together a police agency before taking his current position with Portland. This experience certainly adds to his stature and qualifications. Who knows, the man might be interested in coming back to Los Angeles.

Loved your article. ["Acceptance is the Answer ...enough is enough..."]

I just had to take a minute to tell you what a great job you are doing with Los Angeles Community Policing! Your web site is fantastic, and you are really doing a great service to the community.

The vast majority of people are not listening, they're just waiting to speak. Clearly a world of difference between the two, and in the gap lies the problem. I have been following the Parks debacle with personal and professional concern. One of the saddest elements, is watching the Chief literally begging to keep the job. ... The other sadness for me, is that this whole electioneering smacks of the eighth grade, which I didn't like the first time around.

Bill, Although I support Community Policing, Parks needs to stay. This is a political decision by the mayor and the police union. Police need to be held accountable for what they do. I don't have a lot of confidence in LAPD rank and file and middle management.

I am a retired school administrator. I spent half of my working life in inner city and the other half in Hollywood and the Valley. I left behind in each place I worked good friends of each race. You are absolutely correct and most of Los Angeles agrees with you--there should be no consideration or even mention of race in deciding who our political and service (police and firefighter) leaders should be. Each on should be chosen on the basis of his/her qualification for the job, qualifying experiences and potential for leadership in this, our multi-ethnic, multi-cultural city. Each of us in this vast community is proud of and grateful for the services provided by our service groups. We urge that the leaders of these and similar groups be selected with no reference to race--only to the best and most qualified person for the job.

... I agree that it is time to accept that we live in a multi-colored world and we might as well see it as purple as any other. And that it is time to stop making decisions based on reactions to specific situations. Chief Parks (I assume) accomplished a great many good things that had been necessary for some time. We now need to get serious about safety and crime in our neighborhoods. It is OUR city. The discussions I've had with the police in my area agree that respect FROM the community and FOR the community are what is going to make the difference in the long run. And vice versa.

This is a color blind issue with me or it SHOULD be. We want the best qualified candidate period. If it's black, pink, purple, white or LATINO so be it. Lets get on with it and take care of the good Citizens of LA.

... you are so right. I cannot imagine how demoralized LAPD officers must feel right about now with all the infighting and demands made on them. And yet as you point out, they "keep showing up." It's easy to point fingers and become self-righteous which only adds to the problem. The hard part is taking responsibility for ourselves and trying to be part of the solution. Thanks for your support and commitment to the rank and file.

Things will be rocky for a while in the months ahead, but the ones who suffer out this uncertainty the most are the street cops and the community. We need to get back to the business of policing with the community. We have an opportunity ahead to make our department the best again, but this time in a new image, one of partnership, inclusion and collaboration. It is within arm's reach. We need to make our people excited about serving the community, before we can expect the community to get excited with us to solve community-identified problems. ... thank you for taking the time and putting in the work that is involved to maintain this website. Most of all, thanks for caring about the cops and the community!

I just finished reading your latest piece and wanted to tell you how much I liked it. I think your writing style is great. Nice treatment of a sensitive subject.

Bill, thank you for the update. I believe this web site presents a wonderful opportunity to enhance Community Police in Los Angeles.

I went into the website last night and looked around. You are right about having updates in the SLO page to keep the community informed.

Even a completely computer illiterate person like me, thoroughly enjoyed looking at your website! I hope it's not copyrighted, because I'm going to ... steal some of your ideas.

Please continue your efforts to make community policing in our neighborhoods priority number one! I thank-you for all your hard efforts and recognize your commitment to community involvement.

I don't know how I got on your mailing list, but thanks for including me!

I too feel that the Getty is not the proper venue for a C-PAB Summit. I know the Planning Committee is always looking for venues to have the Summit and members to serve on the different committees. Maybe your site will encourage members to get more involved with the Summit for next years'.

I'm sorry you were not able to pass out the fliers. Given the value this web site can provide to enhance the public dialog on the issue of Community Policing, we should be jumping at the opportunity. Perhaps one day we will include THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE in our definition of Community Policing. Thank you for your efforts and commitment to creating an environment in our City where Community Policing flourishes.

From someone out there watching what you are up to - - you are amazing.

Took your advise and am trying to contact our C-PAB ... hooking up [our] newly certified ... Neighborhood Council with the civilian side of our division. How do we ... get new leadership at the top who understands that the future of LAPD is with empowered SLOs and that they should be the "point people" for each division?

Terrific website … You are on your way - I have no doubts that you will ... succeed in aiding the community ... as people realize that your dedication means so much to the community as a whole.

I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication your outfit has given to the LAPD and community at large. Keep up the great work, sign me up!

From the Office of Mayor Hahn

Bill Murray
Hollenbeck Division C-PAB

Dear Bill,

Thank you very much for contacting Mayor Hahn's Office and continuing to express your interest in working with the City of Los Angeles and its Police Department to improve the effectiveness of community policing.

Among the top priorities of Mayor Hahn's Administration is to make Los Angeles a better place to work and live. In order to accomplish this government must be made accountable to the public that it serves. With this in mind, please continue to update the mayor's office on your efforts so that we may make sure that we are receiving community input on all issues of interest for future review.

Thank you again for contacting Mayor James K. Hahn's Office ...

From the Office of Councilwoman Jan Perry

Thank you for your e-mail. I am always excited to hear from community members and I welcome any comments and suggestions you may wish to contribute. With the help of community members like yourself, I know that we are well on our way to improving the quality of life in all the neighborhoods ...

Sincerely,
Councilwoman Jan Perry

From the community at large
. . . reactions to the initial launch, March 1st, 2002:

Thank you for the update. I believe this web site presents a wonderful opportunity to enhance Community Policing in Los Angeles.

Even a completely computer illiterate person like me, thoroughly enjoyed looking at your website! I hope it's not copyrighted, because I'm going to ... steal some of your ideas.

I don't know who might have referred my email address to you but I would like to thank them ... you were able to state succinctly several major issues which I feel never have received appropriate recognition, attention or action ...

I think your enthusiasm is wonderful. A suggestion for future messages on the site might to be to make it as positive as you can, (in reference to the Department) ... Working together and promoting community policing should be an interaction that certainly doesn't put anyone on the offense ...

What a great website. Hope you are getting great response ... I've sent the website to some sworn officers who really like it ... especially because the website is stating that we should support our officers. They absolutely loved that part. There is no other website aside from the league's that supports the officers...

... the one major concern of the (5) issues listed in the outreach brochure [for our new Neighborhood Council] that clearly stood out was the effectiveness of Community Policing …

Here here. We need leadership with a vision and less ego. Thanks for your words ...

[The] issue is quality of policing and involvement of the community - Staying alert, watching out for our kids and our neighbors, supporting initiatives & development that increase educational, recreational & job opportunities for the young people who live among us ...

There seems to be no shortage of police officers at peaceful, nonviolent events ...

... a calm voice of reason; I'm not surprised it's yours!

Congratulations! And Thank You for your efforts. We share your interest, and welcome your enthusiasm. We've been working at the same objectives you have for a long time, and are tired out. We will make every effort to rekindle our enthusiasm and follow your lead ...

Agreed! Now how do we get everyone to "pitch in?"
